ono of our fair nights. The river
was as calm as a clear bluo lake and
the dark sky was studded with gold
en stars. A brilliant moon, tho light
of which seemed to throb and cast
beautiful shadows from tho passing
clouds over the bright green decora
tions of myrtle boughs, huckleberry
and ferns, looked down from her
heights. Tho platform was a per
fect bower of evergreens dotted hero
and thero by numerous Chinese lan
torns. Tho air was full of fragrance
nnd tho graphophone was playing
Hero dancing was enjoyed, while in
tho short distance tho beautiful wind
ing river of Coos wended Its jvay.
Thero were several Invited guests,
all of them having an excelont time
until tho "woo sum' " hours of the
morning interfered.
Messrs. Georgo Farrln, E. R. Col
gan, J. W. Chapman and F. A. Sac-
clii depart this morning over tho
Coos Bay wagon road for Newport,
on Yaquina Bay, where the Great
Council of tho Oregon Rod Men is
to bo held, commencing on Tuesday.
They have with them a candidate in
tho porson of Georgo Farrin, who
Is in lino for promotion to head tho
order, Great Sachem. Mr. 'Farrln is
now Great Senior, tho second ofllcer
of tho order In the state.

summer homo on Coos river yester
day. All outgoing boats wore, loaded
Saturday afternoon with , hampers'
and ovor-Sunday visitors. Every
direction and location had its share
of tho patronage and the resorts will
bo crowded today.
Fred. McCullom left yesterday
afternoon to spend Sunday with his
family at his summer home on the
South Fork of the Coos. As 'guests
ho had with him Guy G. Major, of
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Stauff returned
homo Friday, after having spent a
week at tho Sand hills.
Mrs. S. E. Painter, Miss Painter
and Mrs. Farringer and daughter Ur
sula left Thursday for Ten Mile,
whore they will spend about ten days.
Dogroo of Pocahontas, Sacajcmea
Council, No. D, will have a social af
fair on Monday, the 29th of this
month, it being the last meeting until
tho latter part of September.
The ball given last night by tho
Acme Band was well attended, and
tho receipts amounted to a safe
amount over expenses. The Coos
Bay Orchestra of six pieces furnished
music for the event. Many strang
ers woro present to enjoy for tho
first time a. dance on Coos Bay with
her many charming young ladles.
It Is often remarked by those who
attend dances in Marshfield that tho
young ladies of this vicinity dance
better than anywhere else in Oregon.
The Sigma Chi house boat went up
Coos river yesterday and was duly
dedicated as a fraternity rendezvous.
The boat Is a beauty and attracted
considerable attention by its pretty
appearance, being built on Japanese
lines, with lattice work and low,
wide roof. The color scheme Is
green and very striking.
Miss Jenny Elckworth entertained
a number of young friends at her
home on Tuesday evening. Whist
was played and a very delightful
time was enjoyed by all. Delicious
refreshments were patraken of, and
several selections of excellent music
were rendered by Miss Susie Elck
worth. A part of friends who knew of the
event, dropped In on Mr. J. E. Oren
Wednesday evening to surprise him
with- a pleasant evening and cele-
day. A social time was tho result
and refreshments were served at an
opportune time. Tho assembled
friends departed late, leaving with
tho host felicitations and hope for
many returning birthdays, as happy
as this had been.
Gladys and Nellie Kranlc are visit
ing with relatives and friends on the
bay for the summer, afterwards re
suming their school work at St.
Mary's Academy In Portland.
Tho moonlight ride given Friday
night was thoroughly enjoyed by all
those attending. The party landed
at Jrodans Cove and remained until
early In tho morning. A delicious

amusements enjoyea.
John Cooper, of Portland, went to
Ten Mile yesterday .for several days'
outing.
Mrs. Morgan, of Daniels Creek,
was here yesterday.
Mr. F. Bowron returned from Ten
Milo yesterday. -
C. A. Lchlbrlde arrived home
from the north on tho Alliance.
Miss Lillian McCann, of East
Marshfield, is visiting on Coos River
with her sister, Mrs. Hodson.
Mrs. Montgomery is spending to
day at Enegren's Grovo with rela
tives and friends.
Mr. Elckworth left this morning
for Mlllacomo, whore they will spend
the day gathering berries.

Catching Inlet, were In this city on
Saturday.
Sister Rose and Sister .Ursula ar
rived from Portland on the Alliance
and are at present at the1 Mercy Hos

Rioters are shooting wildly out of
windows and two Japanese are re
ported killed. Murderous assaults
are frequent and the city is verging
almost on a reign of terror. Busi
ness is completely suspended.
