A compilation of the reports received from ovor 10,000 sawmills in
the United States upon their operations In 11)05 gives tho accompany
ing tabic, In which aro shown tho proportion of lumber ltlln-drled
and tho proportion surfaced, tho amount of slab wood sold, and tho
proportion of logs cut on lands bolonglng to tho sawmill operators.
No figures along these lines nro nvallablo for New York, and none aro
given for several of tho States In which the cut was very small.
Tho States In which tho largest proportion of lumber Is klln-drled by
manufacturers aro South Carolina, with 51.3 per cent; North Carolina,
with 3C.5 per cent; Florida, with 35.9 per cent; Alabama, with 34.8
per cent; and Georgia, with 30. C per cent. In other States tho amount
Is less than 30 per cent. Altogether, 1.G42 mills reported tho use of
dry kilns.
