JUDGE GRAY'S
EULOGY ON BAYARD
Judge Gray referred briefly to the
professional career of Mr. Bayard,
and then dwelt upon his personal
charms, his intensity of nature and
brilliancy of intellect, saying that he
held thoso sentiments tho governing
force of his life.
Continuing he said:
"Mr. Bayard may have had his
faults, though his friends found It
hard to discover them. I know that
some that wer impuned to him grew
out of that very while souled devo
tion to duty, as it was given him to
see It, that characterized his public
life. Thn high standards of conduct
set forth by him in his public utter- i
ences were never lowered in tho in-
tlmacles of private life. On such oc-

to fill his mind and heart with anxi
ous solitude for his country and her
Institutions.
This community has hardly yet re
covered from its first sense of loss.
We all missed and still miss, the us
tnining presence of his strong, virile
nature. Tho sun seemed to shine
less brightly after he left us, and
'The mourners went about tho
streets.' But ho has left us tho lega
cy of his good name and the memory
of his upright life. Wo are all bet
ter that he lived among us. Let us
lovo the things that ho loved the
simple life, the unostentatious per
formance of each day's duties and
let us imitate him in the considera
tion of ourselves to tho service of
humanity In our day and generation."
TUG ROSCOE COMES.
Tho tug Roscoe arrived from tho
Siuslaw yesterday with tho schooner
Hugh Hogan In tow. The Hogan Is
to receive the rest of her cargo of
lumber for shipment to San Fran
cisco, at this port. Captain Johnson
of the Roscoe reports a heavy fog
at sea and accounts for the delay In
th0 arrival of tho Casco from San
Francisco in that manner.
