THE DAILT COOS HAY TIMES, MAKSOTIELD, OltEttOtft THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 1007. EFUGEE Bjj A. CONAN DOYLE, Anllior of "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" COPYRIGHT. I5B3, BY HARPER & BROTHERS s J (Continued from Wednesday.) hynat do you moan, fathorV" nsked seigneur. "You have inado somo stake. This Is my good friend Jnory do Cntiuat, of n noblo French nily." This Is Amory do Catlnat, tho hero- and Huguenot!" cried tho monk. "I fe ronoweu mm up tlio St. Law co, and I have followed him up tho licllou, and I would liavo followed 1 to the world's end UC I could but ng him back with mo." 'Tut, father! Your zeal carries you far," said tho seigneur. "Whither isldyon take my friend, then?" 'HeVwjM go back to Franco with his fe. Thcro 1b no placo in Canada for rctlcs." Ju Lhut burst out laughing. "By ;. Anne, father," said ho, "if you lid tako us all back to Franco at iscnt wo should bo very much your itors." And you will remember," said Do Noue stonily, "that you are under roof and that you nro speaking of guest" lut tlio friar was not to bo abashed. Look at this," said ho, whipping a ;er out of his bosom. "It is signed jjovernor, and calls upon you, Icr pain of tho king's dlspleasuro, return this man to Quebec. But I o you now and I shall nevor loavo i until I see you on board of tho i wnicn win carry you ana your e back to Franco." ie Catinat could but admlro tho en- y and tenacity of tho man. It seems to me, father, that you aid have shone more ns a soldier n as a follower of Christ," said ho, it slnco yoa have followed us here I since thcro is no getting away wo y settle this question at somo later o." . great brown cloud had overspread heavens nnd the night had fallen rapidly that they could hardly see gleam of tho river In front of them. savages in the woods and behind captured stockade wore quiet, save an occasional shot. Suddenly a 1 rod glow began to show above one the roofs of the cottages. 'hoy have set It on lire!" cried Du .it. "The canoes must go at oim tho river will soon bo as light as , In! In! There is not ail Instant bo lost!" here was no time for leave taking. Impassioned kiss and Adelo wai :i away and thrust into the smallest oe, which she shared with Onega, children and an unmarried girl. others rushed into their places, In a few moments they had pushed and had vanished into the drift nnd darkness. Tho groat cloud had ken and tho rain pattered heavily tho roof. hank God for this storm!" mur- red Du Lhut "It will prevent the tages from blazing up too quickly." ut lw had forgotten that, though the fs might bo wot tho interior was as them." They had .hardly reached tho guns when two h!ge canoes nilcd with war riors shot out from among tho reeds below tho fort. "Jean, you are our best shot," cried Do la Noue. "Lay for her ns sho passes the great plno tree. Lambert, do you tako tho other gun." The two wrinkled old artillerymen glanced along their guns nnd waited for the canoes to como abreast of them. The flro blazed higher and higher, and tho broad river lay like n sheet of dull metal, with tho two dark lines which marked tho canoes sweeping swiftly down tho center. One wns fit ty yards in rront or tho other, but in each tho In dians were bending to their paddles and pulling frantically, while their comrades from tho woodod shores whooped them on to fresh exertions. The fugitives had already disappeared around the bend of tho river. As tho first canoe camo abreast of tho lower of tho two guns tho Cana dian made tho sign at tho cross over the touchholo nnd fired. A cheer nnd thon a groan went up from tho eager watchers. Tho charge had struck tho surfaco close to tho mark and dashod such a shower of wator over it that for an instant it looked ns If it had been sunk. The next moment however, tho splash subsided, nnd ih canoe shot away uninjured save that one of the rowers had dropped his paddle, while his head fell forward upon tho back of tho man In front of him. The second gunner sighted the snmo canoe as It came abreast of him. It was a beautiful shot The wholo charge took tho canoe about sir feet behind tho bow nnd doubled her up like an eggshell. Before the smoke had cleared sho had founderod, and tho tecond canoe had paused to pick up somo of tho wounded men. "Quick, quick!" cried tho seigneur. "Lond tho gun! We may got the sec ond one yet!" But It was not to be. Long before they could got It ready tho Iroquois hnd picked up their wounded warriors and were pulling mndly downstream. As they shot away the fire died sud denly down in the burning cottages, and tho rain and the darkness closed In upon them once more. "Sly God!" cried Do Catlnnt furious ly. "They will bo taken! Let us aban don tills placo. take a boat and follow them! Como, come! Not an instant Is to bo lost!" "I do not think that they will be caught," said Du Lhut, laying his hand soothingly upon his bliouldcr. "Do not fear. They had a loiif start, and tho women hero can paddlo as well as the mcu. Besides, these canoes of tho Mo hawks aro not as swift ;u tho Algon quin hlrch barks which wo use. In any case, it is impossible to follow, for wo have no boat." "There Is one lying thcro." "Ah, It will but hold a single man. It Is that In which the friar cur.e." "Then I am going in that! Sly place Is with Adelo!" He flung even tho door, rushed out nnd was about to push off the frail skiff when somo one sprang past him and with a blow from a hatchet stovo in the bide of the boat. "It Is my boat," said the friar, throw ing down his ax and folding his arms. "I have found you nnd you shall not escape mo again." Tho hot blood flushed to the soldier's head, and, picking up tho ax, ho took a quick step forward. Tho light from tho open door shone upon tho grave, harsh face of tho friar, but not a mus clo twitched nor a feature changefl as ho saw the ax whirl up in tho hands of a furious man. He only signed himself with the cross and muttered a Latin prayer under his breath. It was that composure which saved his life. De Catlnat hurled down tho ax again with a bitter curse and was turning away from the shattered boat when in an instant, without a warning, tho great door of tho manor house crashed inward and a flood of whooping sav ages burst into tho houso. CHAPTER XXIV. WHAT had oocurrod is easily explained. The watchers in tho windows at tho front found that it wns moro than llesh and blood could endure to remain waiting at tholr posts while tho fates of tholr wives and children wero being decided at tho back. All was quiet at tho stockado nnd tho Indiana nppeared to bo as absorbed as tho Canadians In what was passing upon tho river. One by ono, therefore, tbo men on guard had crept away and had assembled at tho back to cheer tho shot and to groan as tho remaining canoe sped llko a bloodhound down tho river in tho wako of tho fugitives. But tho savages had one at their head who was as full of wiles nnd resourco as Du Lhut him eolf. The Flemish Bastard had watched tho houso from behind tho stockado as a dog watches a rat hole, and ho bad Instantly discovered that tho defenders had left their post. With a scoro of other warriors he raised a great log from tho edge of tho forest, W is Aviary de Catlnat, the lierctlo and Huguenot !" as tinder, no had hardly spoken oro a great yollow tonguo of flamo ped out of ono of tho windows, and Mn and again, until suddenly half of roof fell in. nnd tho cottoco was King llko a nltch bucket Tho flames feed and snuttored in ho nourinir i but fed from below, they grew mgher and fiercer, flashing redly n tho great trees and turning their bks to burnished brass. Tho wholo basement floor wns In tho hands of tho Indlnns, nnd Do Catlnnt and his enemy the friar were cut off from tho foot of tho stairs. Fortunately, however, tho manor houses of Canadn wore built with the ono Idea of defense against Indians, nnd even now thcro wero hopes for the defenders. A wooden ladder which could be drawn up In case of need hung down from tho upper windows to tho ground upon the river side. Do Catinat rushed round to this, followed oy the friar, no felt for tho Indder in tho darkness. It was gone. Then, Indeed, his heart sank In de Bpalr. Where could ho fly to? Tho boat was destroyed. Tho stockades lay between him and tho forest? nnd they wero In tho hands of tho Iroquois. Suddenly ho heard a volco from somo where In the darkness abovo him. "Give mo your gun, lad," It said. "I boo tho loom of somo of tho heathen down by the wall." "It Is I! It Is I, Amos!" cried Do Catlnat "Down with tho ladder or I am a dead man!" "Have a care. It may bo a ruse," said the voice of Du Lhut. "No, no; I'll answer for it!" cried Amos, and an Instant later down came tho ladder. Do Catlnat and tho friar rushed up it and they hardly had their feet upon the rungs when n swarm of warriors burst out from tho door nnd poured along the river bank. It was n very small band who now hold tho last point to which they could retreat. Only nine of them remained tho seigneur, Du Lhut, the two Ameri cans, the friar, Do Catlnat. Theurfot tho major domo and two of tho const tnires. Tho stone staircase rn straight up from tho kitchen to tho main hall, and the door which had been barricad ed across the lower part by two mat tresses commanded the whole flight The cards wore still laid out at ono end of the table, with tho tricks ovot lapping each other, as they had left them. " But there was Boinethlne else there of more Interest to them, for the breakfast had not been cleared away, and they had been fighting all day with hardly bito or sup. Even when face to face with death Naturo still cried out for her dues, and tho hungry men turned savagely upon tho loaf, tho ham and tho cold wild duck. A little cluster of wlno bottles stood uoon tho buffet, and these had their necks knocked off nnd wero emptied down parched throats. For four hours sounds of riot, of dancing and of reveling rose up from the storehouse, and tho smell of tho open brandy casks filled the wholo air. Slore than onco the savages quarreled and fought among themselves, nnd it seemed ns if they had forgotten their enemies abovo, but tho besieged Boon found that if they attompted to pre sume upon this they were ns closely watched as over. The major domo, Thouriet, passing between a loophole and a light was killed instantly by a bullet from tho stockade, and both Amos and tho old seigneur had narrow escapes. Slowly tho light crept up the eastern sky, a littlo lino of pearl, then a band of pluk, broadening, strotchlng, spread ing, until It shot its warm color across tho heavens, tingeing tho edges of tho drifting clouds. De Catlnat stood at tho window looking out when suddenly his eyes fell on a dark spot upon tho river to tho north of tliom. "There is a canoo coming up!" he cried. In an instant they hnd all rushed to tho opening, but Du Lhut sprang after thorn and pulled them angrily toward tho door. "Do you wish to dio before your time?" he cried. "Aye, 'nyo!" said Captain Ephralm, who understood tho gesture if not thp words. "We must leave a watch on dock. Amos, lad, Ho here with mo and bo ready if they show." Tho two Americans and tho old pio neer held tho barricade, whllo tho eyes of nil tho others wero turned upon the approaching boat. A groan broke sud denly from tho only surviving ccnsl tairo. "It is an Iroquois canoo!" ho cried. "Impossible!" "Alas, your excellency, It is so, and it is tho samo ono which passed us last night." "Ah, then the women havo escaped thorn." "I trust so. But, alas, seigneur, I fear that there aro moro In tho canoo now than when tlioy passed us." Tho littlo group of survivors waited In breathless anxiety whllo tho canoo sped swiftly up tho river, with a line of foam on either side of her and a long forked swirl in tho waters behind. They could boo that sho nppeared to be very crowded, but they remembered that tho wounded of tho other boat wero aboard of her. On sho came, and on, unt'I as sho camo abreast of the fort phVBWung round, and tho rowers raised their paddles and burst Into a shrill yell of derision. Tho stern of tho canoo was turned toward them now, and they saw that two women woro seated In it Tho ono was Onega and tbo other Adcle. Charles do la Noue, seigneur do Ste. Marie, was a hard and self contained man, but a groan and a bitter curse burst from him when ho saw his In dlan wlfo in tho hands of her kinsmen, from whom Bho could hopo for littlo mercy. Yet oven now his old fashioned courtesy to his guest bad mado him turn to Do Catlnat with somo words of sympathy, when there was a clatter of wood, something darkened tho light of tho window, and tho young soldier was gone. Without a word ho had lowered the ladder and was clambering down it with frantic baste. Then, as his feet touched tbo ground, ho signaled to his comrades to draw It up again, and, dashing into tho river, he swam toward tho canoo. Wi J .
