proper affidavit, filed May 23, 1907,
set forth facts which show that after
due diligence personal service of this
notice can not bo made, it Is hereby
ordered and directed that such notice
be given by due and proper publica
tion. G-14 4t. Benjamin h. Eddy.
XOTICK TO THE STOCKHOLDERS
OP THE COOS RAY TIMES PUB
LISHING COMPANY.
Reports from tho San Francisco
offices of th0 Steamer Breakwater arc
to tho effect that the boat will dis
continue to run between Coos Bay
and San Francisco when she leaves
dry dock, but will make the run from
Coos Bay to Portland on weekly
schedule. This will give the Bay
three boats between this port and
Portland, and only the steamer Plant
to handle the trade from San Fran
cisco. The heavy portion of the
shipping in tho past few months has
been from Portland, and with tho
steamers Breakwater, Alliance and
Kllburn to handle it tho situation
here will be materially relieved.
There is no doubt In the minds of
local shippers but that tho business
at the rate it is growing will soon be
oven more than the three boats can
handle
Tho report printed a few days ago
to tho effect that the Southern Pa
cific steamer Czarina was going to be
put on regularly between Coos Bay
and Portland, gives the Bay people
four boats from hero to that port.
Tho date of putting tho Czarina on
regular was not given, although it
was Intimated she would commence
on her new schedule not later than
tho latter part of the summer.
SOUNDING COLUMBIA
Believed That Increased Depth In
Clmnnel Will Bo Found as Re
sult of Work.
Bar soundings are now being taken
at tho mouth of tho Columbia river,
nnd it Is belloved that an Increased
depth will be found. Colonel Roess-
lor, engineer officer In charge of the
work, is unable to give exact figures
until tho survoy has been completed.
As great a depth as 28 feet has been
reportod In tho south channel, but
this Is not confirmed by tho en
gineers. Tho bar pilots, who always
contend that tho engineers report
more water than actual soundings,
insist that there Is not more than 22
feet at low tide.
Tho deeper channel Is tho rosult of
tho Jetty extension, which Is yet only
partly completed. Tho good results
glvo assurance that a further exten
sion of tho jetty and tho future con
struction of tho proposed north jetty
will bring further depth.
Notices to mariners will bo issued
today from tho office of tho inspector
of tho 13th lighthouse district, to the
offect that tho buoys marking tho en-
tranco to tho Columbia river will be
shifted to tho south channel without
notice, provided that tho survoy now
bolng conducted by tho government
shows a sufficient depth of water
warrant the change.
