Owing to our equable climate the death rate In Oregon Is low compared with most States. The tubercle bacillus is found in countless 'numbers In the spit of a consumptive. After the spit has become dried, tho germ Is taken up by currents of air and carried broadcast settling with tho dust on furniture, carpets, walls, window ledges, curtains, ar ticles of clothing, and food. It is often breathed Into the lungs. Tho germs, if deposited in dark, damp places, retain their power of producing disease for months. Then when stirred by broom or feather duster (tho most potent weapons for spreading consumption) , they nro often breathed into tho lungs of people who aro not strong, and consumption follows. Consumption attacks especially those who live In crowded and badly ventilated rooms. Consumption is caused by the dust from dried sputum. A- consumptive who coughs and spits overywhero and anywhere is a danger to tho community. Workmen who spit on tho floors of tho workshops, spread tho disease A careful consumptive, one who coughs into a handkerchief and spits Into It, or Into anything that can bo burned or boiled, Is perfectly safe to bo about you. The only consumptive to bo afraid of Is tho careless consumptive. If ho will not stop spitting, ho should bo reported to tho Board of Health as a dangerous nuisance. How Suptiim (Spit) Should lie , Destroyed. No consumptive patient should suit on tho sidewalk, tho floor of a room, a public hall, railway car, or othor vehicle Uso a handkerchlof, preferably of papor, when coughing, and to receive tho sputum, If papor, placo In n sack and burn at tho first opportunity. If linen handkerchiefs aro used, thoy should bo boiled one-hnlf hour boforo washing. Cuspidors when used by consump tives should contain a five ner cent solution of carbolic acid. This solu tion Is prepared by dissolving ono ounce of carbolic acid In n piut and a half of water. Tho cuspidor should be cleansed by boiling water. All apartments inhabited by con sumptives should bo thorouchlv dis infected with formaldehyde gas or burning sulphur, boforo being occu- Picu uy others. And all bodding and clothing therein should be similarly treated or else thoroughly steamed or' boiled. The advanced and uncared for con sumptive is a menace to his family and neighbors. Tho consumptive who has been taught how to care for his sputum and conscientiously observes tho in structions given him, is not a menace to society, although ho be In an ad vanced stage. Tho consumptive who disregards advice and (either Ignorantly, negli gently, or willfully) spits promiscu ously about, Is criminally responsible, and should bo deprived of his liberty and Isolated. No spit no consumption. IIP J)r. Bancroft I for. , I VISUAL DEFECTS I NERVOUS A I 1 CHRONIC ILLS ij B Office oppt Cental Hotel 1 1 t iiii m iLimiwPiin MHif ' 1 wmci mmmm a nam mmum !
