Oregon. OUI5 WATEK KKOXT. We of C003 Bay have in the water front an asset that cannot bo reck oned from a monetary standpoint. Ultimately Coos Bay will be a coast link between the Pacific and the United States. Commerce demands (outlets. Twenty-five years from to lav villi Pujtet Sound, Golden Gate and the Columbia river be sufficient to handle the Pacific ocean exports and imports of the Unitedi States? In 1S9G our exports to Asia and Oceanica alone were 5-12, 827, 25S. Ten years later, 190C, the exports to those countries totalled almost $145, 000,000. Statistics could be cited showing the proportionate growth of manufactures, minerals and domestic products, but as all could but illus trate the one point, they would be superfluous. Along the Pacific coast there are no harbors that rank with Coos Bay geographically. Both San Francisco and Puget Sound rank sec ond to it when distance to ports across the water is considered. Obviously these point to a future day when hero wo shall enjoy the steady flow of the world's commerce. It is this future for which Coos Bay seems destined that places on the shoulders of Coos Bay citizens an almost sacred responsibility. We have In our hands the water front. Tt is the key to tho whole situation. The franchise by which the use of the water front Is turned over must bo drawn up vlth the greatest euro and consideration for the future development and welfare of Coos Hay. It is, in fact, the franchise by which tho water front is assigned that will in time act either for good or evil to this country and the coun try at large. Among the most es sential points the franchise should be clear as to tho price which the com pany operating the water front road Is to charge for switching cars. The maximum price should not be over $2.00 per car, as tMs leaves a talr propo'.tion of profit. The franchise should stato specifically the rate to .be charged for handling cars. It bhould state specifically that IjAXD casks. The land cases against the Oregon .1 California Railroad and Southern Oregon Land Company are calling forth much comment and Incidentally attaining for the Coos Bay country widespread publicity. Local attor neys believe, and the opinion is backed up by Attorney General Craw. ford, that when the suits are finally ground through the courts the find ing will be in favor of the appli cants. Our courts have recently shown an Inclination to deal more favorably with the individual than in the past, regarding suits brought against cor porations. Should the decision in the present suits be adverse to the land barons this country will be benefited immeasurably. "' ' Flanagan &. Bennett Bank MARSHFIELD, OREGON.
