From the People
To the Editor:
Must the people of Marshfield con
tinue to sufter insult because it fnl'3
to their lot to return from a visit t
North Bend during the evening hour
on one of the public carriers the
launches?
Last evening the writer, in com-,
pany with two ladles yrell known in
Marshfield society, while returning
home on one of the launches were
subjected to tho grossest insult3 by
none other than one of the officers of
the launch, who not being on duty
at the time and in an intoxicated
condition seemed to take a peculiar
delight in makjng himself geneialh
obnoxious, in company with some
companions of a like character. Ob
jectionable language was indulged In,
and because tho writer declined to
engage In a drunken brawl on the
"boat and thus endanger the lives of
those whom ho sought to protec.
tho Indies were obliged to submit to
Ills continued abuse until a landing
was made, when, like all of his cow
ardly class, he sneaked off to escape
tho trouncing he so well deserved.
Nor is this an unusual occurrence,
for the wiiter, upon making inquiry,
found that those who are obliged to
travel on this public carrier durlps;
the evening hour, are frequently sub
jected to these annoying and humi
liating experiences.
Why should this condition of af
fairs continue? If the management
of the bont in question will not place
men in chargo who will endeavor
to preserve oidor Instead of openly
Insulting their own patrons, the facts
ean be reported to the inspectors at
Portland and have their licenses re
voked. Tho writer will take par
ticular pains to do this In the present
instanco and lessen to some etont
this nefarious nuisance.
