In the year 1897 there departed
from Coos Bay 3G4 vessels of various
kinds; in the year 1907, ten years
later, there departed from the bay
80G boats, an Increase of over 125
per cent In departing boats In ten
years. The cold figures In this case
tell a story of progress and develop
ment more graphic and forceful than
any article replete with richly colored
phrases. It convoys to the most
casual reader a prophecy of fragrant
with future expanding growth and
almost unbounded scope.

A Paragraph History of Coob
County Told From Time To
Time.
First Settlement.
Captain Technor, In command of
the steamer Sea Gull, of San Fran
cisco and the Columbia river, thouji
he saw wonderful opportunities at
Port Orford and established a settle
ment on June 9, 1851. Nine men
were unloaded nnd twelve more were
to have been added on the return trip
of the- steamer. On the return trip
the men who had joined the settle
ment hud disappeared and Indica
tions pointed to a massacre.
Massacred.
On July 14, 1851, another settle
ment, of 67 'men, was made and the
blockhouses wore erected. In 1851
a trail was cut through the forests to
tho south fork of the Coqullle river.
The party of eight men then took
boat and rowed almost to the mouth
of the river. Hero the boat drifted
into shoal water and Instantly the
savages rusned out from tho under
brush and hacked five of the men to
'death, tho other threo escaping.

feet long.
