Receiving Much Attention nt Hands
of District Attorney's Ofllce In
New York.
New York, May 3. Tho counsel
for the defendant arranged with the
district attorney's office for the ap
pearance Monday of Charles S. Fair
child, former secretary of tho treas
ury, who December last was Indicted
on six counts charging forgery In the
third degree. The case grew out of
what Is known as "The Prussian
bond transaction," of New York
Life Insurance company. In this
affair, the New York Life was threat
ened with expulsion from Prussia for
carrying Industrial stocks which tho
Prussian government did not con
sider proper security for Insurance
Investment. According to the New
York Life, It is alleged, it charged
off its books to the New York Secur
ity and Trust company, of which
Falrchild was then president, as a
bona fide scale many millions worth
of stocks in the Chicago and North
western and Chicago and Milwaukee
and St. Paul railroads.
The Trust company, however, It
is alleged, charged off the sale as a
loan, giving its. note.
Jerome examined twenty witnesses
regarding the recent election of the
New York Life directors and which
has already resulted in the arrest of
Manager Scrugham of international
policy holders committee, and two
employes on the charge of conspir
acy. Jerome declared he was per
fectly satisfied with the work of his
assistants resulting in Scrugham's
arrest and he assumes all responsi
bility for what has been done.

Young Man Who Killed Judge
Kniory Receives His
Sentence.
Tacoma, May 4. After the hear
ing before the commission on insan
ity Judge Snell today ordered Thomp
sort, who killed Judge Emory, com
mitted to the insane ward of the state
penitentiary when tho new law goes
into effect June 12. Young Thomp
son was given a hearing and ap
peared sane except when questioned
as to the details of the murder of
Judge Emory, when he appeared ai If
under some peculiar influence. An
appeal will be taken.

Havana, May 4. Santiage news
papers are commenting on the en
counter last Tuesday between the po
lice and the men of the Tacoma, and
declare the Intoxicated sailors began
the disturbance by brutally beating
Captain Lay when he remonstrated
with them. The captain fired a shot
In the air .to .summon assistance.
When the police arrived there ensued
a pitched battle between them and
the Bailors, the latter using pistols
and knives.

Ely a 17-year-dld negro, was lynched
at Rossior Point several days ago, for
