Her.
New York, May 4. Rev. Jero
Knode Cooke, who recently left
Hempstead, L. I., where for five
years he has been rector of St.
George Episcopal church, was to
night deposed from the mlnlstery
l)y the bishop of the church. Beyond
the fact that tho writer asked to be
dropped from the mlnlstery, nothing
is made public regarding a letter
from Cooke which was dated New
York. Coincident with Cooke's de
parture, Miss Ploretta Whaloy, a 17
year old girl, who Is about to come
into Inheritance of $125,000, also
disappeared from the home of her
grandmother. The girl's parents are
dead. On his death bed, the father
consigned Floretta to the spiritual
care of Cooke. Tho girl has written
her grandmother that she has gone
away with tho minister. Cooke's
wife is at her parent's homo in Hartford.
WIIITK SICKS LATIN QUARTER
Paris, May 4. Ambassador White
had his first glimpse of the Latin
quarter when he attended a recep
tion at Trinity lodge, a semlrellglous
club founded by a New York woman,
Miss Smith. All tho American stu
dents in Paris were at the reception
and many fashionables besides. Mar
guerite Sylvia of the Opera Comlque
sang1 and so did Miss Brooks, another
American.
Ambassador White was the guest
of honor during the week at another
entertainment, one In Miss Fannie
Reed's nrt salon. There, too, wore
the German ambassador, Prince
Radolln and his wife.

Roosevelt, In an address at tho un
veiling of the statue of General
George B. McClellan, characterized
as a weakness the desire for peace,
unless It could bo obtained on the
right terms. He would have none
of the so-called peace If it merely is
"Another name for self Indulgence,
for sloth, for timidity, for avoidance
of duty. Tho man who would do the
best for his country In peace," the
president declared, "Is the man who
In need will do well In war."
The president began his address
by giving generous praise to General
McClellan, of whom a heroic equest
rlal statue today was unveiled under
the direction of the Army of Poto
mac. President Roosevelt extended
tho greetings of the nation to Mrs.
McClellan, widow of tho general,
and her family. He praised the
statue, which is by Fredrick Mc
Molnes, as a beautiful gift to Wash
ington and thanked the committee
for having chosen the noted sculpt
or to do the work. Appropriate
ceremonies, civic and military, mark
ed the unveiling. Dr. George Mc
Clellan of New Jersey, tho general's
nephew pulled tho string releasing
tho national colors, which enveloped
tho statue.
