Accident at Libby Mine Makes

Owing to an accident at the Libby
mine a few days ago, the place will
not be operated at full capacity for
at least two or three more days, and
on this account the Breakwater will
not bo able to take a full cargo of
coal thlB trip. This trip she was
able to take only fuel coal.
The mine Is not closed down en
tirely, but only the upper part can
be operated. The lack of men to
work In the mine Is being felt very
much at the present time also.
Mr. Chandler states that men are
exceedingly hard to get at the pres
ent time, owing to the general open
ing up of lumber camps in this lo
cality. The accident to the mine will cost
in the neighborhood of $1,000. It
was not duo to carelessness on any
of the workmen's part, but Is one of
those unlookcd for accidents which
cannot be helped. A car fell and
broke props and machinery. It comes
at a bad time. ,

to relate the legal and historical mat
ter with which these papers dealf.
During the last campaign, the matter
of these grants was a subject of in
terest, and I request opportunity
through the Oregonlan to report to
the people what I have done thuslai".

ly pleased to find that he had Investi
gated the matter. It Is cur under
standing that the department of Jus
tice will undertake the enforce
ment of the terms of the grant. 1
presented the matter to Hon. Jamc3
R. Garfield, Secretary of the Interloi,
and Judge R. A. Balllnger, Commis
sioner of the General Land Ofllce, and
from the department of the Interior 1
have received a letter, signed by the
Commissioner.
