The following letter wo give fur
what it is worth. It appeais from re
port that some ono has be^n annoy
ing ’’Uncle Jimmy” with the story
thvt the County Court wa. i going to
sell him. He 'says:
“I am now living with Mr. Groves,
with whom I am well pleased. I
liave been indirectly informed that
the unhallowed institution of white
slavery is about to l>e established in
Yamhill county,-. Oregon,)'wherein I
have been sold once before to a drunk
ard. Is the crime of being parulized
—•■though it appears great in the sight
<»f hell-bound humanity—a crime*
ag.MUst the State of Oregon, that an
Irishman should be sold like a bul
lock in Smithfield to the highest bid-
dci? When yojurTfonorable County
Court consents to t,hat glaring abom
ination in the sight of God, so degrad
ing to hdmanitÿ, I immediately re
nounce all county assistance, and
place myself under the protection of
the United States Government for
protietion agaiftst insult apd coercion.
Any emissary ot satan attempting to
traffic in my fivsh and blob«! must re
turn without hi* acquisition. My re-
jiumstrance against such villainous
conduct in accordance with the dark
est stages of Pagan Rome, is definite.
Respectfully yours,

C.W’ttCG-—On last Sunday at fcll
A. m . and 7 Pl.M. there were unu
sually large cougregntions to listen to
thé sermons delivered by Rev. Dr.
Watts. Throughout the entire dis
course the congregation paid very
close attention to the remarks. To
the major portion of his hearers the
nieas anvanced, and fully substantia
ted, were new. At the conclusion of
his remarks an invitation was ex
tended to any that wished to unite
with the Church at Lafayette, to do
so. Ten- persons united with the
Church. In thé evening the rite of
baptism was administered to three
candidates.

away. She was immediately con

days to hear oUher convalescensc.
