S plendid .A ffair .*—The necktie
P»rty. given at this place, uncler the
auspices of the young ladies belonging
♦o the Good Templars, assisted- by
Mrs. Bird and others, was an excellent
affair. T1 ie Court House was thronged
with the orti/e, beauty and chivalry’ of
tho town, and the utmost sociability
and enjoyment reigned throughout
the evening! ;A11 took an active part
in making the’ occasion a grand suc
cess. Music was kindly furnished by
Messrs. Lewis, Burner and Perkins.
We believe it is the intention of the
• ladies of this place t</have something
of tho kind every week or two during
tho coming winter, and why not, in
lieu of other amusement? Every one
appeared to enjoy themselves, and we
must say, it was one of tho ipost
pleasant affairs it has been our pleas
ure to witness for /many a day. Tho
young ladies did the honors with
most ’charming grace, and by their
lavish and impartial smiles wheedled
the money outi of the gallants to the
tuno of about $25 to bo given into the
yawning coffers of the lodge. When
you Lave another'of theso gorgeous’
affairs,’ ladies, just let us know, so we
can be on haiidlo obtain some of
those bewitching smiles.

N ew B ooks .—It is the intention of
the Lafayette Sunday School to adopt
tho Songs of the Bible for use in the
school. Mr. Summerville kindly left
abofit a dozen of these most excellent
books with Mrs. Burbank, tho Super
intendent. All will - bear us out in
saying that the Sunday School is sad
ly in need of a change of singing
books, as tho ones now in use are worn
almost threadbare, so to speak. As
opportunity now presents why not
improve it and make tho change?
