T rees . —I wish to state a curious
effect of tar on fruit trues which
caine under my observation this
year, and I hope it may prove a
warning to all of your readers who
may think of painting fruit trees
with tar to prevent hares or rabbits
from barking them, or for any oth
er purpose. These trees were
painted from the ground upward,
one or two feet; and almost every
tree—apple, pear, peach, quince
and all—ceased to grow where
painted, while that part of the
body above the painted portion
continued to grow, expand, and
thrive, as if nothing had happened
—bark, brandies, and leaves look
ing very Ihrifty. A few of the
trees died suddenly while in full
leaf; the others are now fine look
ing above, but the body, where the
tar covered it, looks as though it
had a laced jacket of iron around
it f>r one year, and is a half inch
or more, lef^?
le^” in diameter. I think
the whole orchard will finally die;
for some of the trees jrom weak
ness of the stem below and grow
ing weiglft above,-are toppling
over. Iwes this hot show that the
entire bark of a tree, as well as
the leaf, is an organ of rcspiraf

be replanted with cabbages, kohl,

sweet corn, peas or beans. Plant
sweetcorn, string beans, etc., every
two wçefei, so as to hqvo a succes
sion to supply the table without
running short or using over-ripe
corn, etc. Removo borers and
worms from the bark of apple and
peach trecss below the surface of
the ground; remove knots from
plum trees. Apple and péar troé*
may be sommer pruned, but do
not trilpr'clÆiry trees or shor(on
io the poach tree at this season;
remove excess of fruit, so that
what remains on the trees may be
improved in quality. Cut off
runners in strawberry beds as fast
as the plant! have done fruiting.
Mulching gooseberry bushes will
prêtent mildew. Sammer prune
grapevines, and manure freely
with liquid manure and twine dust,
if their growth is sluggish. Do
