France uses one hundred and ninety-five millions of pounds ; while the United States, with a much smaller popula tion, consumes more paper than England and France put together—namely, four hundred and forty millions of pour da. A F eminine F reak .—The Portland cor respondent of the Boston Herald gives the details of a singular freak on the part of a yooDg lady, a resident of a neighboring town, which has just been brought to light, under very ridiculous circumstances. Ho says : It seems that frequently during the past year she has been in the habit of getting herself up as an old man and coming to town on the cars. In her disguise, she would stroll about the city to her heart's content, and re turn home to tell the few friends in the se cret of the fun she had eDjoyed. If spoken ’ to, she feigned deafness. The venerable form bad become quite familiar in our streets, but none dreamed that behind those, green goggles sparkled a pair of roguish eyes : that the seedy old coat covered shoulders that might rival those of Venus that within those tattered unmentionables were the supple and rounded limbs of blooming yonug womanhood; or that un usual stbep of the •• old gentleman" was quite necessary to conceal a certain plump ness about the front part of the waistcoat. But our romantic young beroiue came to grief. Protracting her strolls too loDg the other day, the train was leaving just as she limped into the depot. In her anxiety to get on board she forgot her years and raD after it with such vigor as to astonish the natives. “My hies, Johnny, look at that old coon go it," exclaimed an enthusiastic nene- boy ; “hain’t he a lively old cock I” A smart run enabled the foolish girl to throw herself upon the rear platform, but just as she did so away went her hat, wig and gog gles. Two gentlemen on the rear platform were considerably astonished, but the yon g lady has terminated her fan-loviog proclivi ties in that line.
