    RAS, OREGON
MADRAS
is the business center for the entire Northern
Crook County district, and is the first town
of importance reached via the O.-W. R. &
N. and the Oregon Trunk Railway after the
Columbia River is left behind. Since the
coming of the railroads its growth has been
steady and substantial. It offers to its resi
dents the comforts and facilities of modern
civilization numerous churches, progressive
grade and high schools, well-stocked stores
and a substantial bank, close communication
with the outside world, a city water system
affording adequate fire protection and an
abundance of pure water for domestic uses,
and. soon to be installed, electric lights and
power. A flouring mill manufactures a most
excellent quality of flour, and numerous ware
houses provide marketing and storing facili
ties for the products of the district
Madras and vicinity offer exceptional at
tractions to the homiseeker and the investor.
Present values are in keeping with production.
1THE GATEWAY CITY
Situated at the Gateway to the vast Oregon interior, in the heart of the
moft fertile dry farming country in the Northwest, Northern Crook County,
whose products have received prize after prize at the Dry Farming Shows
Wherever Madras products have been exhib
ited they have taken the lion's share of prizes.
They have entered into competion with the best specimens that
could be procured from the fields of the most productive dry farms
in the west, from localities where dry farming is a much older in
dustry than it is in Northern Crook County. The transformation
of this great territory from range to farm is a process that has oc
cupied far less than a decade.
The prize-winning products of Northern
Crook County are not limited to grain alone.
Under the methods of scientific tillage practiced by the farmer of
today, the diversified crops of the American farm arc produced in
like profusion and quality. Alfalfa, the richest of forage crops,
is an important factor in making the farmer's profits, and Corn,
Fruit, Potatoes, and Vegetables of all kinds are surc'and profitable.
Poultry and Live Stock thrive, and animal health ranks high.

UNDERGROUND WATER
FOR USE ON THE FARM
The United States Geological
Survey states in Water Supply
Paper 255, entitled " Under-g-ound
Waters for Farm Use,"
just reissued, that no appliance,
either mechanical or electric, has
yet been devised that will detect
water in places where plain com
mon sense and close observation
will not show its presence just
as well. Numerous mechanical
devices have been proposed for
detecting the presence of under
ground wattr, ranging in com
plexity from water, ranging the
simple forked branch of witch
hazel, peach, or other tree to
more or less elaborate mechanics
or electric contrivances. Many
of the operators of these devices
esp' c'a ly those who use the
h me cut forked branch are en
ttrely honest in the belief that
the working of the rod is in
fluenced by agencies usually re
garded as electric currents follow
ing underground streams of
water that are entirely inde
pendent of their own bodies and
many people have implicit faith
in their own and others' ability
to locate underground water in
this way. In experiments with
a rod made from a forked branch
it seemed to turn downward at
certain points independent of the
operator's will, but more com
plete tests showed that this
downturning resulted from
slight and until watched for
unconscious muscular action,
. A t
the ertects ot wnicn were com
municated through the arms and
wrists to the rod. No move
menr, or. tne roa irom causes
outside of the body could be
detected, and it soon became
obvious that the view held by
other men of science is correct
that the operation of the "divin
ing rod" is generally due to un
conscious movements of the body
or of the muscles of the hand.
The experiments made show
that these movements occur most

Railway Receipts and Expenses
The business of the railways
for September, while showing a
considerable improvement over
that of September 1911, does not
maintain the rate of increase set
by the record breaking month of
August. The total net operating
revenue of 90 per cent of the
steam railways increased $5,896,
840 for September, whle the in
crease for August was $13,865,-
622. This increase in net operat
ing revenue was at the rate of
$21 per mile of line for the
month or at the rate of 70 cents
per mile of line per day. I
The total operating revenues
per mile ot line for the month
increased 6.5 per cent, the oper-'
ating expenses 7.3 per cent and
the net operating revenue 1.5 per
cent.
The foregoing statistics are
from the summary made by the
frequently at places where the .Bureau of Railway Economics
operator's experience has led . from the reports of the railways
him to believe that water may to the Interstate Commerce Com
bo found, mission. A special committee of
The uselessness of the divining the railways having headquarters
rod is indicated by the facts that, in Chicago reports that bills now
it may be worked at will by tho pending in the Federal Congress
operator, that he fails to detect providing for an increase in the
strong water currents in tunnels
and other channels that afford no
surface indications of water, and
that his locations in limestone
regions wjiere water flows in
well defined channels are no
more successful than those de
pendent on mere guess. In fact
its operators are successful only
in regions in which ground water
occurs in a definite sheet of por
ous material or in more or less
clayey deposits, such as pebbly
ciay or clayey deposits, such as
pebbly clay or till. In such re
gions few failure can occur, for
wells can get water almost any
where.
The only advantage of employ
ing a "water witch", as the
operator of the divining rocs is
sometimes called, is that crudely
skilled services are thus occasion
ally obtained, for the men so em
pioyea, n endowed with any
natural aptitude, become through
their experience in locating
well shrewd, if sometimes un
conscious observers of the occur
rence and movements of ground
water.
