The Procipilus Bumeliae, as it is named, stunts the grow th of young trees,. "This louse spends the winter in t.vo differ ent stages, eggs found on the bark of ash trees, and' hibernat ing lice on the fir roots," said Prof. II. F. Wilson, discussing the new pest. "Those on the fir continue to live on the roots, while those on the ash bark hatch from the eggs in spring and crawl to the leaves, where they feed', causing the leaves to curl. In the latter part of May and June winged forms appear and mi grate from the leaves to the fir tree roots, where they produce wingless lice which remain there until late in the fall. These last then produce a generation which includes both winged and, wing-; less varieties. The wingless re main on the fir through the win er, while the winged ones mi grate back to the ash tree and deposit the eggs on the bark which remain there during the winter. "The serious thing, about the nest is that the lice attack the young fir trees when they are from 1 to 4 years old, and in many cases the trees become stunted from the injuries caused by the feeding-of the lice." L. Vincent Astor is to come control of $100,000,000 when he roaches the age of 21. He has always had that prospect before him; he has always had practi cally anything he wanted ; every- hing has come to him without effort. Is he to be envied I Contrast him with a, young man who on attaining his majority has nothing but a sound body, a well trained brain and the energy and purpose to achieve success. He experiences a joy in posses sion gained by his own work of brain and hand such as young Astor can never feel. His pleasure is in conquering obstacles, in beating down opposition, in Macauloy in New York World. WEALTH vs. BRAINS- into I'.climbing step by step with his eye ever on the goal of his am bition. "When he attains that goal, his pleasure-consists not in nossession. but in contemplating the struggle by which it was at tained. Possession without that struggle would have no flavor, as the conquest of a foe who makes no fight is not vauled by a general who would' exult in victory won by a hard fought battle. No. Better be a poor man, sound in wind, limb and brain, and fired by a purpose to achieve than ba Vincent Astor to whom fortune has denied the pleasure of achievement I A MESSAGE FROM OLD SANTA CLAUS DR.
