Madras, Enough potatoes were produced I in' Oregon this 'season to .give about 1500 pounds to every man, woman and child in the state, and leave enough for seeding the next crop. Latest returns from the crop indicate a total production of 16, 000,000 bushels of potatoes, com pared with a crop . of 7,920,000 bushels in 1911. The increase this season is due both to in creased acreage and to the great- Obbqon er yeild per acre. By conservative estimates the potato yield in Oregon this sea son averages 200 bushels per acre. While in some places an of the Interior. P. MYERS LAWYER culver junction. OREGON average of 250 bushels per acre Practice in all court and Daoartwent was produced; .other sections shows .yields around 150 bushels per acre. The estimate of 200 bushels as the, average for the entire, state is therefore consider ed conservative. The acreage of potatoes grown and ready for harvest in Oregon Oregon this teason is placed at 80,000 acres or nearly double that of a year ago. There was a larger acreage planted, but some was so badly affected by blight that it will not be harvested. This year's acreage at digging time is therefore far the greatest ever known in this section. The in crease places Oregon among the LEWIS K. IRVING . Potatoes will be cheaper this season than for many years. It will not be the question so much of prices as it will be to sell the product Even at the low price that will be paid producers, there is money in the growing of the tubers, although the extremely high prices that have ruled dur ing recent years havejgiven grow ers ideas regarding the price they should receive, that are not in line with what consumers be lieve they should pay. Not only is there a bumper crop of potatoes in Oregon this season, but there is a record out put in Washington and in Idaho. California tells the same story; in fact, the potato production of the United States this season ranks amongthe greatest grown. Last year 1 he American crop was so short that the Atlantic coast states were compelled to purchase much of their needs from Europe. This year there wHl be sufficient stock grown at home to suit the appetite of everyone and therefore prices will be affected. On account of the great crop of potatoes grown along the Pacific coast this season, the rail roads have been unable to take care of the business and this will have a depressing effect up on the price.
