During the IaBt twelve months this amount has reached the enormous figures of $8,000,000, and since January 1, more than $4,000,000 has been expended. rrominent in the improve ments for the year ending June 30th have been betterments to the North Bank Road between Portland and Spokane and the extension of the Oregon Electric from Salem to Albany and Eu gene. Service was inaugurated to Albany July 4. The line will be opened to Eugene this fall. The expenditures cover the North Bank Road, the branch to Astoria and the Oregon sea-coast, Oregon Trunk Railroad, Dalles,' Portland & Astoria Navigation Company and the Spokane & In land Empire system. The Sa- lem-Eugene extension will cost $3,000,000 makincr a total invest ment from Porland to Eugene of approximately $4,500,000 when the Eugene service starts. This will give the Willamette valley electric transportation for people and products covering a great territory. The work now in progress on the Hill lines in uregon is in keeping with the policy of th6 company to provide and majn tain the most modern railroad possible. This means new ex tensions, more equipment, and betterments of every kind to meet the increase in traffic and keep the Hill roads in Oregon and Washington in line with the rapid progress of the country which they now serve.
