Young of theDes- hutes Vallley Tribune, was business visitor in Madras today J. H. Barkley and wife were down from their home at Culver the latter part of the week? Rev S. W. Robinson of Culver held meetings in the Christian Church the latter part of the week and Sunday. Mr & Mrs C. W. Waugh o Culver, were in Madras Satur day looking after business mat ters. Luther Melton and wile wer down visiting their daughter Mrs Gerbing the latter part o the week Mrs Grant and son Mason of Lamonta. were in Madras today looking after business matters. G. Van Allen and wife of Gate w.iy, were in town Monday o this week trading with the loca merchants. -J s. Rice of Haycreek, passed through Madras on his way home from the Southeastern pa,rt of the county, Monday. Dr. Gale, who is now located in Portland, came up the latter . pa-t of the week to attend to some operations this week. L. B. Ackerman of Grandview Oergon, made final proof, on his homestead before Commissioner Turner today. J. C. South of Culver mace first year desert land proof on his claim located in the section west of Grandview today. Ola Larson and George Cass of Grandview, Oregon were down as witnesses for the proof of Mr Ackerman. Dr J. Ray Pemb'erton of Me tolius is looking after the pati ents of Dr Haile's who is taking a months outing in the moun tains. Miss Cassie Sears and brother Van Sears came in Monday even ing going out to the home of L. A. Newell, where they will spend so ne time. H. L. Priday and family and P. T. Monroe and wife were busi ness visitors in Madras Friday from their homes on Trout Creek. Albert Oiler of Sweet. Home, Oregon, came in Tuesday even i ig and left Wednesday morning for his brothers ranch in he Hay- cr3ek country Pearl Tucker and Gus Love land, left friday for Paisley, where they expect 10 open up a blacksmith shop in the near fu ture. Mrs Delia Z. Nichols, of Laid law, a candidate for County School Superintendent on ihe Socialist ticket, was fn Madras Friday evening and addressed a gathering at the Christian Church. R. P. Schurer and wife left the latter part of the week for their former home in Sherman, County, where Mr Schurer ex pects to operate his thrashing outfit this fall. HOMESTEAD LAW (Continued from 1st page) assessment," is taken to mean, that any person who held proper ty in the district on the first of March, 1912, or any person resid ing on a homestead although not proved up on, but has been as sessed fcr his or her improve ments at the last county assess ments entitled to vote at this special election.- The question of taxes in addi tion to the present ta of lh mills that we are paying this year for the maintainance of the Gounty High School, has been raised by our neighbors and they have sent representatives in different districts trying to mis lead the people, and to clear your minds we would call your atten; tion to section No. 288, which reads as folows. (a) Nothing in this section shallb e construed as to prevent a'l school districts in the County irom uniting to form one or more County High schools; pro vided, that when any school dis trict, or union high school dis trict, shall maintain a high school which in all respects shall be equivalent in efficiency to the county high shcool, which effici ency shall be determined by the district boundry board, such ter retory shall be exempt from a tax to support a coun'y high shcool; and provided further, that when any regular school district, or union high school district shall establish a high school prior to the submission of the proposition to establish a county high school the electors of such school dis trict, or union high school dis trict, shall be excluded from vot ing upon said proposition.
