Jerry Schooling, of Haycreck, w ;3 a visitor in Madras Monday attjnding to business matters. J T. Robinson and sons, of diver, were down Wednesday trading and visiting relatives. Ralph Young and wife were in town Saturday from their ho ne at Gateway. R. T. Starr, traveling agent for the Great Northern Express Co npany, was in Madras Wed n 3sday looking up business for his company. L. G. Savage made commuta tion proof on his homestead so itheast of Madras, before Com missioner Turner last Monday. Frank Carev and family, of Salem, Oregon, are spending the week at the home of Mr. Carey's sister, Mrs. W. R. Cook. John T. Monical, of Grandview on the west side of the Des chutes River, came over Monday on business before the U. S. Comirrisiioner. J. C. George, of Asotin, Wash ington, returned to his home, after spending several days in this vicinity looking after land holdings. G. M. Elkins, John Baylis and D. M. Trolan, of Blizzard Ridge, were in Madras Friday and Sat urday attending to business mat ters and trading. Mansel Wheeler and M. R. Os bDrn, of Grizzly, were in town 1 joking after land business Tues day, and trading with the local merchants. Albert Sims and James A. Garrett, of Blizzard Ridge, were over Tuesday as witnesses in the homestead proof of Frank Bar ber. Mr. and Mrs. S. Hinkle, of Prineville, are spending some time at the home of Mr. Henry Wilson, Mrs. Hinkle's father, northeast of Madras. Frank Barber, from the other side of Haycreek; made final five year proof on his homestead before Commissioner Turner Tuesday. Misses Hazel and Ada Culp, who have been spending a few weeks at the home of their grand mother, Mrs. W. H. Culp. re turned to their home at Burns the latter part of last week. D. G. Gay, of the Blizzard Ridge, country, was in Madras Tuesday looking after land mat ters. He expects to make proof on his homestead about Septem ber I. Porter Ashley has bought two lots just sqijth of Mrs. W. H. Culp. He : ;has not decided whether he will build, or move his house from its present loca tion near the depot on Agency Plains. "Red" Hobson, proprietor of the Merrimac Cafe, has closed his place of business and is look ing for a new location. Here's hoping that he will find a place soon, for maybe he will engage in another bread war. Saturday 0. A. Pearce took Mrs. Pearce and sdn Glenn, Mrs. S. E. Willams. on the Little Plains, west of Ma dras, occured the death of James W. Wilmms, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Willams was born in the state of Ohio, coming west soon after his service in the Civil War, residing in California and Oregon most of the time. Whilo in California about a year ago, Mr. Williams was stricken with paralysis, from which he recovered, his death resulting from a second shock. While splitting wood Sunday, J. W. Bones, residing eaSt of Madras, had the' misfortune of having a clip of wood strike him in the eye, causing a-Very pain ful wound. The injured optic has been cared for by Dr. Snook, and nothinc: serious will result is the opinion of ths doctor. H. S. Crothers, of Spokane, one of the stockholders of the Madras State Bank, came in Fri day evening and will remain some time looking after his in terests in this section. lie was accompanied by C. H. kerbaugh, of Wisconsin, who will be assist ant cashier, taking the place of J. L. Dohuff. W. J. Rogers, a horse buyer from near St Paul, 'Minnesota, has been spending several weeks at the Warm Springs reserva tion, buying horses from the In dians. Mr. Rogers has 210 ready to load and as soon as they are passed on by the State Veteri nary, tney win De loaaea at Mecca and shipped to Toppinish, Washington, where he has sev eral cars more, and from there the entire consignment will be shipped to St Paul by special train. A party of railroad officials, accompanied by Mr. Crozier, the official photograper of the Hill lines in Oregon, were in Madras and on the Agency Plains Wed nesday. securing some views of the harvest fields and the many harvesting outfits now in opera tion. Mr. Schroeder, of the Great Northern R. R. stated that they had secured some very fine views, and that probably they would make arrangements to sceure others before the season was over. Darrett, one of the old timers in Centra' Oregon and Northern Crook County, has sold his interests here and left Sat urday morning for Portland and Vancouver, B. C. Mr. Garrett came to Central Oregon in Octo ber 1879 and has resided in the northern part of Crook County to the present time. He acquired land on Trout Creek, which he put under a high state of culti vation, selling his holdings to J. G. Bolter for $5500.
