To extend the usefulness of the Northwestern Fruit Exchange, a branch has been opened in London by W. F. Gwin, man ager, and it is opened to extend the fame of Northwest fruit throughout Europe. It is be lieved the present business there can be increased largely. It is promised that liberal sums will be provided for the buiding of boulevards and gen eral improvements m Crater Lake National Park by the Government. It is the intention to secure appropriations for $100,000 annually for the next seven years. An item of $100,- 000 has been inserted in the Sun dry Civil Service bill and it is expected it will go through this session. The Southern Pacific Company plans a new department of elec tric lines through the Willamette Valley. It is thought a big sys tem of trolley interurban lines will be built up within the next few years that will aid very greatly the development of the Willamette Valley country. Dr. Paul Ritter, Minister from Switzerland to the United States, believes large numbers of his countrymen will enme to the Pacific Coast and settle when the Panama Canal shall have been opened. He was enter tained at luncheon by the Port land Commercial Club the past week. He looks for a heavy movement of thrifty European farmers to this- state as soon as the way is opened. That Oregon should not over look the chances to capture some good prizes at the International Dry Farming Congress at Leth bridge, Alberta, in late October, was urged upon Portland people the past week by Daniel Morgan, of Spokane, one of the governors of the Congress. He told of the importance of this exposition and the publicity to be gained by good exhibits. Household Expenditures That Mny 0 Cut Out. Wonmu'tt life Is innilo up of lltllo things, niul thin Is especially true ns repmlH the iniuinfromont tuul HpoiuHiw of small sums of money. The piMinleH Blip away unnoticed until they are udded up at the week's or month's end, to show an alarming and astonlshlnc total. The only way to remedy this Is to plan out a thorough system of houso liold expenditure and adhere to It In pplte of all temptation to "launch out" In one direction or another or Indulge In pet little unnecessary extrava gances. It depends on the manner of living whether you should huy In large or small quantities, also upon the Alzo of the family and capacity for storage. It therefore need not he u matter for regret If you rtnd It dllllcult to munago purchasing In quantities, for the sec ond method may suit your case host. Work out some system between the "hand to month" style of living and the purchase of large amounts, Huy your groceries, for Instance, Willi mo Intention of making them last for a whole week, and see that they do so. Marketing Is an art and deserves thorough study. Watch prices and lmv what Is cheai) and In season. wiiPii a certain llsh or fruit Is being Bold lu qunntltles for low prices make tho most of the opportunity, even If It means rearranging all your plans for the week's meals. Above nil, pay easn. if von must buy very little buy oniy tho best and use every scrap of It. You will find It comes clieaper man uslnc uoods of an apparently lower price, where half cannot be eaten. Itemomber that hardly anything need be thrown nway. It Is tho little wastes that lead to trouble. It Is often astonishing to llnd that poor peo ple think nothing or throwing away cood nieces of food that a good house keeper, even one with plenty of mon ey, would bo furious to Hud wasted In her own household. The smallest senilis of meat, vegeta bles, fish, bread, nil serve for soup, pud dings, etc., and even the bones should be boiled down for stock until all the goodness Is extracted. It Is best to divide your housekeeping monev to cover the necessary expend! turea and then live strictly within It. This can bo done no matter how little inouey you have once the proper stand ard of living Is discovered, as clever managers among the very poorest of womeu have proved again and again. A man said recently that If his busi ness were run as carelessly as Ins home he would be bankrupt tomorrow, niul he said this Jestingly, not In com plaint Housekeeping, properly understood Is Just as Important and Just as Inter esting as managing any business.
