Dun's Review, published weekly in New York city, com ments on the Portland market condition as follows : Retail trade is fair and orders are in normal volumn. A feel incr of confidence pervades the entire Pacific Northwest owing to the bumper crops now in sight and the good prices assured the farmers and also because of gradual expansion in the lumber trade. A wheat crop of 70,000, 000 bushels, and worth to the farmers $52,000,000, is the esti mate of conservative dealers for the three States. The value of the oats crop in the same terri tory is placed at $18,700,000; the barley crop at $10,000,000 and hay crop at $35,00,000. Total shipments of wheat, flour in cluded, from all North Pacific ports in May were 2,593,788 bushels, and for the season to date, 32,088,804 bushels, the largest quantity on record, bar ring the season of 1907-08. Lum ber shipments from Portland in May were 12,473,000 feet to coastwise ports, and 6,438,858 feet exported, which compare with total shipments of 16,071, 012 feet in the same month last year. An encouraging feature of the lumber situation is the placing of supplemental orders by theHarriman lines for 20, 000, 000 feet, making a total of 50, 000,000 feet of lumber recently ordered for car , construction. Wool buyers are picking up clips wherever offered, at prices ten per cent, higher than last year. Several sections, where auction sales were scheduled to occur, are entirely sold out. The hop outlook is for a crop of 110,000 1 bales in Oregon, which dealers are contracting for at 25 cents a pound. Only 1400 bales of the old crop- are unsold. Nearly all kinds of fruit are promising well, especially apples. A crop of 16,000 cars of apples, pears, peaches and green prunes is es timated for this territory. Build ing permits, issued in May num bered 903, valued at $1,522,276, compared with 588 permits, valued at $1,878,330 issued in May, 1911 rrlsonor'8 Lawyer (whispering) SPbcre's no use in denying that the (prosecuting attorney's speech is hav ing a powerful effect on the Jury.
