Rhoads and Shorty Lowe left Monday after noon for the former's ranch near the Lower Bridcre, where they expect to spend a month farm ing and fishing. Orla Hale was in from his Haystack ranch Monday, attend ing to business, preparatory to returning to his ranch at Sum mer Lake the latter part of the week. Attorney E. Bergland left for Portland Wednesday morning to attend the Thayer vs Thayer case, which is being heard in the Multnomah Circuit Court. The depositions of R. T. Olsen, Mr. and Mrs. Snowden. White and Mrs. C. V. Duling were taken before Howard W. Turner in this city Tuesday. J. H. Barclay and Mrs. M. E. Percival were in Prineville the early part of the week in atten dance at the rally of the Chris tian churches of Crook County A large number of representa tives were present and a county organization was started with Henry Gray of Prineville, as president, William Boegli, of Culver, secretary, Mrs. Angie Smith, of Prineyille, treasurer, Mrs. H. P. Belknap, of Prine ville, Supt. C. W. B. M., and Mrs.'M. E. Percival, of Madras, Supt. C. S. S. Pullman Conductors. Miner, of Seattle, who a few months ago purchased a part of the W. H. Kilmer lands east of Madras, has been here this week looking after his local interests. Airs. Pearl Osborn returned the early part of the week from Ter rebonne, where she had spent a few days with friends and rela tives. John T. Dizney, Ora Van Tas sel, J. E. Campbell and Ed Love were among those coming from Vanora Friday to vote at the Kutcher polls, near Madras. Edear W. Clark, William F. Hughes and William H. Taylor of the Opal Prairie country, made five year proofs on their home steads before Commissioner Tur ner Tuesday. George Eastman and family, of Seattle, arrived from that city last week, and have taken up their residence on the homestead formerly owned by Lewis P.Foss Mr. Eastman having taken over the improvements on the place. Jesse Hobson, who has been spending some time at Paisley, looking after the interests of the Northwest. Townsite Company , was in Madras the early part of the early part of the week, look ing after his interests here. Geo'ge Miller a former resi dent of the Haystack country, came in Thursday from the south ern part of the state, where he has been looking after some land, and is visiting friends. He ex pects to leave Friday mornig for his home in The Dalles. Mrs. Emerson Wilson, accom panied by her son Ray Crawford and daughter Thelma Wilson, left Thursday for Portland. After a short visit in Portland, Mrs. Wilson and daughter Thelma will go to their old home at South Bend, Washington, Crawford re turning to Madras to resume his duties at the 0. T. depot. Special Deputy Sheriff D. W. Barnett, is in receipt of sub poenas for persons in this vicini ty to attend the May term of the Circuit Court. They are James Arkins, Fred Missel, Frederick J. Benedix and H. J. Branstetter. The two former ones are not now residents of Crook County. George L. Merritt and wife of Rossville, 111., and W. H. Wier man, accompanied by Mr. Wier man's sister, were visitors in Madras and vicinity the early part of the week. Mr. Wierman, at one time was employed on one of the first railroad surveys into Central Oregon, ai'd at that time purchased some 'cheap land on the Agency Plains, which he still owns, and while here made ar rangements ; fpr the future culti vation of his holdings. Testing for dold at the Lower Bridge Though the gold excitement at Lower Bridge died away some time ago it now develops that the interest of capitalists has not flagged.. Saturday, a machine taken from Terrebonne to the scene of the finds near the bridge for the purpose of mak ing further tests of the black gold bearing sand in that lo cality. The possibility is believed to be strong that these sands can be so worked as to poduce gold in paying quantities. At any rate certain capitalists, re presented by a Portland man named Stevens, have faith enough in the prospect that they now have men on the ground in vestigating. This entire country is underlayed with a black sand similar to that which at Lower Bridge contains traces of gold. Whether the sand can be made to produce precious metal in pay ing quantities and whether the sand underlaying the entire country contains gold is what these capitalists now propose to determine Oregon Hub.
