Emil Brock, who has charge

in Madras Monday looking after

Edwin W. Mason made final
five year proof on his homestead
before Commissioner Turner

F. S. Senn, an extensive owner
of real estate in tnis vicinity,
is in this section this week look
ing after his interests.
Milo Elkins, of the Blizzard
Ridge country, was in Madras
Saturday trading with the local
merchants.
C. C. Covey, of Warmspring,
was in Madras Saturday, on his
way home from the southen part
of the county.
Born to the wife of W. N.
Mitchell, at their home on the
Acrncy Plains, Tuesday April
16th, a boy.
G. Springer, democratic can
didate for the office of county
judge, was in Madras Wednesday
calling on friends.
D. F. Areinsmier and family
passed through Madras Monday
on their way to Salem, were
they expect to spend the sum
mer. County Commissioner Bayley
was in Madras Tuesday, looking
after the work on the new grade
nrth of town to the O-W. R. &
N. depot.
Rev. J. J. Pacey and wife left
Tuesday morning for The jalle3,
to be in attendance at the dis
trict conference of the Methodist
Episcopal Church.
Deputy Sheriff Hahn and J. V
Snyder filed on homesteads
across the Deschutes river, be
fore commissioner Turner, Satur
day.
C. D. Brown, of Bend, one of
the republican candidates for
sheriff, was in Madras Saturday,
pettincr acauainted with the
people in this section.
W. A. Bel . of Ihe Dalles, is
snendincr this week in the north
ern part of Crook County and
southern Wasco, in the interest
of his candidacy for the office of
district attorney.
Many of the people of Madras
are missing the genial smile of
bur friend Fred Zell, better
known as "Sharkey", who left
for Kansas City Sunday morn
ing, for an extended trip, he
says.
N. J. Sinnott, candidate for
representative in Congress, was
a passenger out Saturday morn
ing, having spent the greater
part of last week in Central Ore
gon, getting acquainted with the
people in this section.
The local butcher, John X.
Campbell, shipped to the Port
land market Sunday morning
one car load of hogs and three
car loads of cattle, from the
Madras stock yards on the Ore
gon Trunk line.
S. Price and familv, of Ander
son, Missouri, arrived in Madras
Saturday evening and are now
stopping at the home of L. L.
Wilson, whose wife is a sister
of Mr. Price. Mr. Price expects
to locate in this section, and will
either purchase some improved
land or take up government land.
E. J. Nicholson, a cousin of
Alex Marwick, of the Central
Oregon Merchantile Company,
arrived from the Orkney Island?,
off the cost of Scotland, the
early part of the week. He wi 1
leave after few day's visit, for
Portland, where he has a posi
tion in view.

Wednesday looking over the in
terests of his company here, and
inspecting the new water system
I John Mayes, bettor known an
"Uncle John Mayes", returned
last night from his former home
in Tennessee, where he has been
spending several months, accom
panied by a wife and two other
families from that section, who
expect to make their future home
in Central Oregon.
From the material at hand, a
team will be chosen to go to
Metolius next Sunday, and play
the winners of the recent game
up there. All are eligible to
make this team, and it is es
sential for all who are candidates
for the regular team which will
represent Madras against the
neighboring towns, to get out
and practice.
Reliable information has been
received that the land office
officials have decided favorably
for the defendant in the recent
contest initiated by the Govern
ment against the claim filed on
by Charles H. McElroy.
Complaint in this case was
made to the Government officials
who investigated the matter,
and instituted a contest a few
months ago, the hearing being
had about two months ago in
Madras, at which much testimony
was taken, 'and the decision
reached settles the matter of Mr.
McElroy 's claim to the land on
which he made his home for over
five years, and made a large
amount of improvements.
