Personal and Local
Dr. T. A. Long made a busi
ness trip to Prineville Friday and
Saturday of last week.
Miss M. McCrudden and Mrs.
E. Lytle, of Haycreek, were in
Madras Monday doing some trad
ing. Mrs. R. P. Scheurer came down
from Redmond last week, and is
receiving.medical attention from
Dr. Haile. .
Dr. Clark and wife who have
been spending several weeks
past in Madras, left for Prine
ville Saturday. They expect to
return in a few weeks.
Rev. Zimmerman, one of the
field men of the anti-saloon lea
gue of Oregon, spoke at the
Methodist Episcopal church last
Sunday morning.
J. M. Hayes, Elmer Mathews
and S. Llewellyn, of the Agency
Plains, loaded a car of potatoes
at Gateway last Friday, for the
Portland market
Miss Young who has been
teaching the primary grades at
.the Madras Public School, was
called to her home at Bend Tues
day on account of the death of
her nephew.
Lewis J. Wylde, one of the re
publican candidates for the
o fice of Assessor of Crook Coun
ty, was in Madras Monday of
this week getting acquainted
with the voters in this section.
Dan Adams and wife have re
cently traded their ranches in
this vicinity for land in Wasco
County, and will make their fu
ture home on Chenowith Creek.
D. W. Baraett, the local real
estate agent closed the deal be
tween Adams and Fred Fisch.
Miss Rose B. Schlattman, of
Kalama, Wash., has been visiting
her many friends in Culver.
She took .the Sunday train for
Bend, where she made proof on
hei desert claim. Deschutes

The new bank is practically
finshed, and will be opened next
week. The fixtures will be put in
place the last of this week, and
the officials of the bank will
probably do their moving' Satur
day. G . A. McFarlane, of Redmond,
candidate for the republican
nomination for county judge,
was in Madras Thursday meet
ing the voters, and looking into
the local political situation in
general.

A. J. Henncman, of Portland,
formerly a resident of this sec
tion, has been buying potatoes
in this section and shipping
them to Portland during the past
week. He secured several car
loads, loading them at different
points along the road.
William Smith and daughter,
Elva M. Smith, who have home
steads on the Metolius "River
passed through Madras Tuesday
on their way from Warm Springs
agency. While here Mr. Smith
purchased a large supply of mer
chandise for his family.
John McTaggart left Wednes
day morning for Prineville, Bend
and Redmond, with his machine
loaded with traveling men. He
expects to be gone several days.
Howard W. Turner spent the
early part of the week at Prine
ville and Redmond.
Work on the Oregon Trunk
well at Opal City has been dis
continued, and the machinery
will be installed in the near fu
ture. The hole has been bored
to a depth of about 1400 feet,
water has raised in the hole
several hundred feet, and from
all indications, the supply is a
good one. Many difficulties have
had to bbe overcome in the drill-
ing or tms wen ana several
months have been required to do
the work, but with the use of the
most modern machinery, Mr.
Austin, the man in charge of the
operations, has been able to ac
complish the difficult task.

firm of Goldsmith. Colston. lloudley
Si Johnson having used the phrase "a
shining ornament of the Cincinnati
bar" in referring to some other law
yer, Murat Halstead seized upon the
phrase and thereafter Invariably re
ferred to Mr. Johnson as "the brass
ornament of the Cincinnati bar." At
an evening gathering Mr. Halstead
saw a handsome woman. He begged
to be presented and was to Mrs John
son. It did not occur to him who the
lady might be. He'Jfc'as curious about
ber. "Johnson. Johnson?" he repeated.
"I have never had the pleasure of
meeting you before, Mrs. Johnson. Do
you live In Ohio?" "Oh, yes." replied
the lady, brimming over with smiles;
"I live In Cincinnati." "Indeed!" said
Mr. Halstead. quite astonished. "May
I inquire of what family of Johnsons
you are?" The smiles were more than
merry this time. "Mr. Halstead." she
replied, "for fifteen years I have been
trying to polish up the brass ornament
of the Cincinnati bar."
