If the plowing is done long enough before seeding to allow nature to do the settling and compacting it can scarcely be too deep on silt and clay lands. If, however, . plowing cannot be lone a considerable period be fore seeding, it should be rela tively shallow, because usually it cannot be properly settled and compacted immediately prior to seeding. The disc following the plow will be of service, but it does not equal time and rainfall. Besides plowing breaks the ex isting moisture relations and some time is essential to read justment Unless followed by raining, deep plowing immed iately before seeding will give poorer yields than shallow plow ing. Whether new breaking shall be deep or shallow depends upon the surface conditions. If the surface is covered with grass sod, the first breaking should be shallow, two or three inches and rolled down flat immediately be hind the plow. Sod cannot be well broken unless the soil is moist The sod does not turn well or roll back flat unless moist. Then rotting, so essen tial to the best success on new breaking, takes place only when the soil is moist. Land that is covered with sage brush or is not in sod should be broken deeply, as well as old land, and for the same reason. It catches water better when broken deeply. The formation of a crust on plowjng forms a layer through which water enters slowly. When such a crust is formed it should be broken up so that the soil will have a maximum catch ing power for future rains. After the water is caught by the soil, it undergoes certain movements. When it moves downward through the spaces betwoeto the. soil particles by its own weight, we may say it per colates. When it crawls upward or downward or sideways like water in a lupip of sugar or oil in a lamn "wick.5 we say it has capillary or film movemnt, be- 'catjse, it mpves along as a thin mm movement over tnu aurxiiuu of tho soil particles. Sometimes changes in temperature cause the soil; to .move, In that case ITEMS OF INTEREST professional cards. FOR HALE A house and four lota E.
