Personal and Local Brenton Jones of Metolius was .a business visitor in Madras yes terday. A. W. Culp left Monday morn ing for Portland for a visit- with his parents. C. W. Carter, a real estate man from Metolius, was a business Visitor in Madras Saturday. Jno. T. Dizney, postmaster at Vanora, has been making daily trips from Vanora to Madras, carrying the mail. Mrs. J. G. Hardy and children returned from Portland Sunday evening, after making a second trip to Fallbridge. John Payne, a rancher from the Ash wood country, was in town Sunday and Monday attend i g to business matters. Carl W. Schrieber of Culver made final commutation proof on his homestead before Commis sioner Turner Wednesday. Mike Campbell returned the early part of the week from Portland and St. Paul, Oregon, having spent several days with friends and relatives. Friday of last week Mrs. Eliz abeth Reuter made final proof on the homestead of her husband, John Reuter, before the Commis sioner in Madras. James Kaas, a former resident of this section but now located at Richland, Oregon, arrived in Madras Tuesday evening and is visiting friends an i relatives. William C. Young made com mutation proof on his homestead before the U. S. Commissioner Saturday, with Isaac Martin and Lawrence L. Nichols as witnes ses. Dr. Harold Clark and wife came down from Prineville Tues day and expect to be in Madras for a few weeks. The doctor has opened an office in the Mc Taggart hotel. Robert Rea came up from Portland Monday evening and will spend some time in Madras looking after the interests of the tcvn in the construction of the new water system. The Epworth League of the M. E. church, on Friday night at 8 o'clock, Jan. 19, will debate on "Resolved, That Home Missions are of Greater Importance than Temperance Work." Admission free to all. Miss Mary Prickett of Shaniko came in Tuesday evening and made final proof on her home stead before the Commissioner. She was accompanied by Mrs. J. McClelien, who acted as one of her witnesses, the other wit ness being Mrs. Margaret Mason of this place. County Judge Ellis and Com missioner Rice came down from Bend Saturday, looking after some county business. Sundaj they returned to Culver and looked over the work that has been started on the road across Dischntes river. Mr. Rice re turned to Haycreek Tuesda evening. Installation of Officers Announcement has been made that the public installation of the oilicers of Mt. Jefferson Local of the Farmers' Union for the com ing .year will be held at the Mountain View school house on tie Plains, Saturday eveninr, January 20th. Everybody is invited, to attend. After the installation a mock trial will bo held, with C. F. Po.vell, defendant, and Bernice Ramsey, plaintiff, in a breach of promise suit. And now is presented a petition requesting this court to notify all those interested in con sidering the possibility and ad visibility of a bond issue for roads: It is therefore directed that the county clerk cause a circular letter to be sent to each post master, to each newspaper and to each commercial club in Crook county notifying the public that the question of a bond issue by Crook county to aid in the con struction of good road will be held at Prineville, at 10 a. m., Feb. 5, 1912, and it is earnestly requested that every section of the county be represented at such meeting. Homestead Aid Proposed Senator Chamberlain is prepar ing and will introduce a bill for the relief of homesteaders, dif fering from all measures now pending in that it will provide that any homesteader, after six months' continuous residence on his land, may be entitled to leave of absence for six months of each year; that is to say, home steaders will be required to re side upon their land only half of each year until final proof is made. By this means, he believes, settlement will be greatly en couraged and homesteadingmade easier. Senator Chamberlain thinks some relief must be grant ed to attract settlers to those lands now open to homestead entry. FRED DAVIS, Postmaster Columbia River Frozen Friday morning the Columbia river was blocked with ice from the upper river down to Crate's point. The Bailey Gatzert came up from Portland Wednesday of last week and left on the return" trip at 7:30 that same evening Tor fear if she waited until morn ing she would not be able to nake the trip and the fear was well founded. By Thursday morning at 10 o'clock she was no further than Cascade Locks and did not reach Portland until thar. evening. Mr. Harmon Cook of Laidlaw wants to meet the voters of Madras at the M. E. church at 7 P. M. Friday evening. E. J. JefTery, of the firm of JefTery & Rnfton. who are installing the water system in Madras, left for Portland this morning, expecting to join a party that is going to climb Mt. Hood the latter part of the week. M. W. Bennett has sold house and lot to William J. Branstetter here in Mad ras, the consideration is understood to be $1000.00. Mr. Bennett and family left this morning for Walla Walla. Wash . where they will make their fu ture home. City Marshal Frank Staugland arriv ed home from The Dalles Tuesday even ing, where he has been confined to the hospital for several weeks past receiv ing treatment for a wound in his lcf. He states that several operations were performed for the removal of particles of bone but that it is so far improved that he will be able to take up the du ties of his oftice within a few days. DR.
