McCall, who has been spending several weeks past in The Dalles, Portland and Astoria, returned to Madras Saturday. fr'upt. C. C. Covey of the Warm Hprings Indinn Agency, who accom panied his father to his old home in In diana, is expected back this week. John Maddron, the blacksmith who was seriously injured by being kicked while shoeing a horse about two weeks ago is reported to be speedily recovering. W. H. Stonehocfcer and T. P. Mon roe are advertising a sale of farm im plements and livestock at their ranch four and n half miles northeast of Mad ras, Tuesday, September D. Miss Nellie Farrell, who is studying to become a trained nurse at the Good Samaratin hospital in Portland, came out Sunday to viidt her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Farrell, of Youngs. W. H. Ormsby, traveling freight and passenger agent of the Northern Pa cific railway, was in Madras and vicin ity the early p:irt of the week looking after the interests of his company. Mrs. Scott McLane returned home last week from Portland, where she has been for several months past re ceiving medical attention. Her health haB materially improved during her ab sence. Hubert Bland of Grizzly, returned this week from The Dalles hospital, where ho underwent an operation for appendicitis. The operation was very successful and was performed by the local staff of surgeons. L. H. Tiffany and daughter of Warm Springs Agency spent the latter part of the week in Madras. Mr. Tiffany wns looking nfter some matters per taining to his position as Farming In structor for the Indians. JesBe Hobson and son Clyde, return ed Thursday from Lake and Harney counties, having accompanied a party eastern capitalists and engineers, who were looking over some irrigation pro jects and townsite additions. W. P. Hershey, manager of the Tum-a-lum Lumber Co., at Gateway, came over Sunday to assist in the Hinging at the song service Sunday evening. He was a guest of Mr. ami Mrs. Essel styn and family while hi the city. Edmond Hcaly, who has been spend ing some time in California, was in Madras Tuesday calling on friends. He has sold out his interests in this section and cxpectB to make his home near Pittvllle, Cal., in the near future. Stanton Hlack came over from' Bliz zard Uidgc Tuesday, and expects to tako buck a threshing machine which was shipped to this point on the Des chutes railroad. Mr. Black and T. S. Hamilton purchased the machine to gether. J. S. McMcen of Lainonta, accom icd by his son Bruce, left Monday for Portland to receive medical treatment. Mr. McMecn has a cancerous growth on his face, which hns been giving him u great deal of trouble during the past few months. A change in rural route No 2 was inaugurated this week, giving patrons a much bettor service than before. The new route as indicated on the chart commences ut the Bramstetter school house, running cast for one mile, thence two miles south, thence west two miles, one mile south, two miles east and one mile south, coming out again near the 0. W. U. A N. depot. The change is made for the accomodation of people living at the south end of the big plain. City Recorder J. H. JackBon is mourning the, loss of n horse, burned to death last week In a fire Hint destroyed a bairn and its contents.. on tho ranch of Mrs. Julia R. Dean, five miles north oaat of town. Jack, the numo tho horse was christened, was ruised by Mr, Jackson from a colt, and for almost twonty years had done his duty faith fully and without u murmur, being con sidered almost ono of the family, Somctimo ago the horao wus loaned to Mrs. Dean with the understanding thnt she was to bring him homo every Sat urday, to allow tho owner to use him on his fishing excursions over Sunday. Last Saturday tho horse failed to como homo, word being received that a Bogo brusli fire caught tho barn during the night destroying the horse.
