TAYLOR FLAYED JONES. And Then, to Got Squaro, tho Revival ist Told a Story. Hero la a well authenticated story of Sam P. Jones, revivalist nnd lecturer: Jones and ex-Governor Bob Taylor, now a United States senator from Tennessee, seldom met professionally In public. They were two such amaz ingly good drawing cards that few Chautauqua managements ever felt able to afford both of them In one day. However, one management made tho plunge, and the two witty southerners found themselves on the same plat form. Taylor Introduced Jones. lie flayed Jones unmercifully, leaving little cuti cle on him. Tho crowd laughed hearti ly and waited for Jones to take his re venge. Jones nrOse. Ho was always cool ns Ice. This time was no exception. The audience held Its. collective breath. The scathing was about to begin. Jone9, however, said nothing to indl rate that ho had even heard what Tay lor had said. The crowd felt that al last Jones was overmatched. He de llvered his lecture and made the usual hit. Yet there was much surprise that he had not replied to Taylor. Just as Jones finished his set talk he turned and looked at Taylor. Then he drawled out. with a Jerk of his thumb toward Taylor: "Whenever I see that man anywheh I'm reminded of n little dawg 1 used to know down in Gawgy. That dawg lived close to the railroad track, and every evening when the fast express train went shooting through that little dawg ran out and tried to eat that train. Every night he would seem to Bay: 'Last night 1 didn't get it, but I've figured out since why it was. I'll get it this time. I'm just so hungry for an express train!' Everybody around there knew that dawg would bo killed some time by that train. Bound to. Couldn't help It. "One hot summeh evening that train came along fasten than eveh. It was Just one big. noisy cloud of dust. That little dnwg ran out as usual and ran along by the tracks. He was sucked in by the draft from the train and dis appeared under the trucks. Everybody Bald: 'Then he went fool dnwg! We always knew he'd get it. Now he's killed, all right.' "But when that train had gone theh came that little dawg trotting back up the track. The train hadn't killed him Tit all only made a bobtailer of him." Presently the audience began to see the joke In sections, and before long It was in a scream of laughter. Strick land W. Glllllan in Chicago News. He Got Even. Justus Miles Forinan once in writing a story for Harper's Magazine used the name of an nrtist friend for the character of a chap who fell in love with a peasant girl In the Milanese. "It made all his friends roar with glee." said Mr. Forman. "But he got even with me by making a -large twenty-four sheet poster for a musical comedy. There was a lady, the star, stepping out of a stage door and a long Hue of Johnnies waiting for her with silly smirks and bunches of violets. And every Johnnie was a portrait of me." A Witty Retort. As Is generally the case with people who have nothing to say worth hear ing, a conceited drummer talked a great deal, to the evident disgust of a number of his commercial friends who were dining at a country hotel. When cheese was served It was of a decided "lively" brand, much to the delight of the Irrepressible. He uttacked it with great gusto, remarking. "I'm like Sain ton slaying thein by the thousand!" "Yes." replied a quick witted diner at the end of the table, "and with tho same weapon too!" Painfully Polite. A Washington trolley car was get ting under way when two women, rushing' from opposite sides of the street to greet each other, met right in the middle of the car track and in front of the car. There the two stop ped and began to a.k. The car stop ped, too. but the women did not ap pear to realize that it was there. Cer- STOPPED AND HECJAN TO TALK. tnln of tho passengers, whoso heads were Immediately thrust out of tho windows to ascertain what tho trouble wmh. began to make sareastlc remarks, but tlu two women heeded thorn not. C. ROBINSON MADRAS, DIGNIfTING THE INDUSTRIES' COLLEGE, Leaguers Want to Know What's Doing Continued from page 1 wanted to investigate them they were at liberty to do so. The chairman refused to ap point the committee a.t the meet ing, doing so the following day. The following composed the com mittee: C. F. Owen, the chair man, W. F. Hammer, H. E. Scull, S. 0. Herman and Frank Elkins, Mr. Elkins has gone away, and Attorney Bergland has been appointed in his stead. During the past few days Messrs. Hammer and Scull haye been working over the city rec ords and it is understood that they have completed their in vestigations and are ready to re port to a meeting to be held Friday night. The result of the meeting has been to arouse a factional feel ing between the council and the members of the league, although the leaguers endeavored to as sure the city officers that the meeting was called and the pro ceedings taken with only a kind ly spirit of co-operation in view. The councilmen could not see the idea from this view point for the reason that the league held two secret meetings previous to that of last Friday night; and even went out of town to have the posters printed for the public meeting, not informing any of the city officials that any meet ing was to be held or for what purpose until the flaming redjnk posters were put out. The rumor was circulated that the real object of the meeting was to launch a recall movement against all of the city officials and this understanding of the case did not add anything to the co-operative spirit of the meeting.
