f Will Close Offices Lyman Griswold, district en gineer for the Oregon Trunk Railway, accompanied by Mrs. Griswold, left last Friday for a trip over the railroad work as far south as Bend, This will prob ably be Mr. Griswold's last of ficial trip over the construction, and the announcement is made that the local engineering head quarters will be closed about the first of August, as all of the work in this division is practi cally finished. Mr. and Mrs. Griswold are planning to take a trip through the Eastern states before Mr. Griswold assumes the working harness again. Burned by Gasoline A flash of exploding gasoline from the carbureter on the big caterpillar engine belonging to Tom Taylor severely burned Neal Jensen, the engineer, last Satur day, while he was working oyer the machine where plowing is being done for Morrow & Keenan east of town. He was hurried to Madras where Drs. Haile & Gale dressed his face, and while the burns are very painful, they are not thought to be dangerous. Mr. Jensen came here recently from Chicago, and is a machinist by trade. He is a nephew of N. C. B. Kaas. Believes Report Was Untrue Engineer Lyman Griswold and Mrs. Griswold returned yester day evening from their trip to Bend and other points south. Mr. Griswold says that he vis ited the Crooked river bridge and that he heard nothing of the losing of the piece of steel in the porge as reported in another column. He believes this report is not true. I. M. Mills a prominent stockman from the southeastern part of the county, was in the city today looking after the shipment of some horses which he is taking to market. Mrs. Glen Loucks and children are here from Portland for a few days. Mrs. J. C. Robinson came home last night from Portland. WRECK KILLS SIX Continued from page 1 accident occurred and that the engineer had received orders to run not more than 10 miles an hour around the "Shoo Fly" curve where the train left the track. At the hearing Tuesday En gineer Myles testified that he was running the train about 15 miles an hour, but his statements are contradicted by the roadmas ter and passengers on the train. Orders issued to Engineer Myles and Conductor Cass at the dispatcher's office Monday after noon are as follows: "Approach third crossing un der control. Run slow over brides at second and third cross ings and Wapinita Creeks. Re duce to 10 miles around 'Shoo Fly,' two miles north of Dike." "I was standing at the rear door of the rear car and when the car started to turn I got out, " said A. S. McCurdy. "I exam ined the track after the accident and found it in good condition. I was unable to find any fault with the track. There was a slow order on that part of the track which was issued by the dispatcher to all trains." The witness was asked by the coroner, C. N. Burget, what he would consider the speed of the train should be, and the road master answered, ten miles an hour. Question About how fast do you think the train was running? Answer Right close to 50 miles an hour. Question Do you think the track would hold the train at that speed? Answer It would not. Question Did you see any ev idence of a sun-kink? AnswerNone whatever. McCurdy said he noticed four or five minutes before the acci dent that the train was speeding and that due to force of habit he checked the speed by counting the rail clicks, which showed a speed of 53 miles. JWhat, in your judgment, Q&uVe.'d the derailment?" he was .hi " Deering Harvesting Machinery r- REPAIRS International Gasoline, Stationery and Traction Engines J. C. ROBINSON MADRAS, asked by a juryman. "Excessive rate of speed" was the answer. He said all the indications at the wreck showed that the train was running at excessive speed. Passengers corroborate Mc Curdy'y statements. Beside those who have died of their injuries, many others were mow or less seriously hurt. Escaping steam from the loco motive scalded the passengers. Among those seriously injured were C, H. Baker, of Sheridan, who was on his way to Redmon. with his family, to establish a new home on land recently pur chased there; J. W. Rassmus, Ellsworth, Wis.; George McKil lip, fireman, Vancouver, scalded and cut; A. A. Camp, Seattle manager Kerrick & Co., nose broken. Slightly injured: Thomas Myles, engineer, Vancouver, forehead cut; Walter Larson, brakeman. Vancouver, hands cut; George Suckich, Burns. Or. ; Pat Collins, Spokane; Thomas Redding, Portland, cuts and bruises; C. Swanson, brakeman, bruised.
