No Excuse For Ignorance An nged farmer nt an extension school of agriculture recently said: "I am glad to bo ablo to learn so much about farming, but It makes me sad to think that It comes too late In life to do mo any good. If I had only known these things yenrs ago I would havo avoided so many mistakes and done so much better." It may bo sad to coutemplnte bene fits that come too late, but It Is sad der still to think of the young men who do not try to avail themselves of knowledge that Is placed before them. There is no longer any valid excuso for Ignorance of the fundamental prin ciples of farming. Agricultural experiment stations, ex tension schools, institutes, bulletins and papers nro within reach of every farmer in the land who reully wants to learn. Tho time the farmer spends f Y over his desk and reading table J Is often the best time of the I year I General Farm Notes. A good way to avoid tho credit sys tem Is to grow tho living at home. It Is usunlly posslblo to grow the most expensive, yet the most necessary, ar ticles of food on tho farm. At our present rate of deforestation fuel and fencing materials will be very scarce wlthlu a few yenrs. IMant waste lands in forest trees to supply the timber roqulred on the farm. Diversified farming Is adn'pted to the man who docs Intensified thinking. The Intensive thinker is always n suc cess ns a farmer or in any other occu pation where his talents lead him. Johnson grass hay is a product that will enablo you to meet tho demand of your animals for roughage. John son , grass Is a splendid crop and should be kept where It Is wanted. Keep up with your work In saving aud applying the manure from your animals. Tho amount and kinds of food that will bo available for them next year will depend largely upon the manure applied to the farm. The flower garden and tho lawn do not add to tho profits of tho farm, but they glvo pleasure and contentment to tho manager and bin family, Orna mental plants do much to endear your sous and daughters to tho honiestend. If you lutvo not enough inolsturo In your soil to germlnnto fall grains havo tho land ready nnd bow early In tho Bpring. Spring' onts often yield well, and when sowing can not be done In tho fall tho next best thing to do is sow In tho spring. Invito tho business men with whom you trndo to come out to the farm and pay you and your family a social visit. Tho presence of tho city bred men will glvo you higher ideals, and your country hospitality will do them good. This will bronden your view of llfo nnd enablo you to enjoy hotter busi ness relations with city peoplo.
