McMURRAY GENERAL Passengek Agent, PORTLAND, OR. THE CRACK OF THE WHIP Br SADIE OLCOTT Copyright by American Prew Asso ciation, 1911. Nell Walker had been courting mo nuuio ume. uut no proposal came. Ono duy ho told mo whero tho hitch waa. "Amiability," ho said. "Is indlspen sable In a wife. Dow can I know be- xoro marrlago that you aro amiable?" "You show a great deal of good aonno," I replied. "There is a great deal In what you nny. Como and take up your quarters with ub for a month. There you will ueo mo every day and often when I am off my guard. I shall be compelled to show my natu- rui umposujon. "And an soon as tho month la over wo will enter upon that other month called tho honeymoon." ho cried enthu siastically, and, throwing bla arma around my neck, ho covered my face with kisses. Now, we women havo a way of do ing things by strategy. I didn't feel any more fear of betraying a disagree able nature with Neil in tho house than when bo came to call on me. I knew well enough that matrimony Is different from courtship and that when two pcoplo settle down to work in dou ble harness there ia going to be a good deal of friction, for awhile, at any rate. 1 thought it a Ono chance to let Nell seo before marriage that these frictions are not all the wife's fault 1 was especially equipped to do this, for my little brother Jack was at home, and 1 well knew that if Nell could stand Jack's antics without los ing his temper ho would bo quite able to stagger under my most glaring faults. ' Nell camo and settled himself for the trlal-my trial. Ho hadn't said anything about being tried himself. and I didn't tell him that be was to be under observation. Nell went to business in tho morning, returning about 6 In tho afternoon. Jack took him in charge aa soon aa be arrived. Nell tried to get rid of him, but Jack stuck like a leech. Nell would bo read ing poetry to me in tho garden. Jack would come up behind him and with a stick and a horse's hair and a tiny ball of paper would make him think that a bumblebeo was lighting on bis nose. Jack sneaked into Neil's room and filled bis underclothing (on the insldei with burs. Nell got the clothing on, then bad to take it off again and was half an hour picking out the burs. Ho was late to business that day and came home In a very bad humor. By such Innocent Juvenile expres sions of a child's nature did Jack In gratiate himself into Nell's disfavor. Nell remarked that the boy bad been very badly brought up. whereupon I simply said that it was evident he didn't like children. To me these little pranks were delightful. Nell said that. tho boy being my brother, 1 was doubt less used to him. Jack during this preparation for a honeymoon found a boy he would rather play with than annoy Nell. So I was obliged to bribe my brother with candy every day and tho promise of a football at tho end of the season to keep him at home during this test of my disposition. Besides, I was obliged to conjure up methods for harassing my lover and suggesting them to the dear boy. When Nell was snoozing Jack poured sand in his ear. Then Jack would steal up behind Nell and alip a small piece of ice down his back under his clothing. And one day when Neil and 1 wero walking over tho lawn together Jack, who was watering the grass with the hose, turned It on my companion and drenched him. This was the climax of a long term of annoyances, and Nell could not have kept his equanimity any longer unless he had been descended from the ancels. He broke loose In a profusion of Bible quotations In which the word "damnation" occurred oftenest. Then ho ran after Jack, vowing that be would knock every bit of spirit out of bis villainous little body. "Mr. Walker," 1 exclaimed severely, "how can you speak so of tho dear child 1" "Child!" be cried. 'Hellion, ratherl "Mr. Walker.'" 1 continued in a dig nified tone, "1 am disappointed. 1 sup Dosed that your disposition was ns gentle as a lamb's. 1 Ond tbut you aro easily angered and when angered not only flerco, but vindictive. How fortu nate that 1 should bave aiscovereu iuo true acerbity of your makeup! our engagement is at an end. Hud 1 mar ried a man with such a temper I should bavo looked forward to the rest of my life with horror." These last words were tne snrao as he bad used to me, but ho didn't re member them. "And bod I marrlPd you." ue re torted, forgetting himself In a new burst of anger, "one in whoso veins flows tho blood of that Uttie viper, 1 would"- I walked straight into tho honso ana ahut tho door after me. Whero he stayed that nignt i amu i know, but tho next morning he camo to me and on bended knee begged me to forglvo hlra. I asked him if he wished to test my disposition any further, and he Bald he was quite satisuea wim u- Then 1 forgave blm. 1 do think men are tho stupiaesi creatures In tho world.
