Alderman, state super intendent of public instruction has issued an announcement calling attention to the annual school meeting day for the state, which thiB year falls on Monday June 19. A Btate wide effort is being made to observe the day in a more impressive manner than has ever before been attempted, and the state superintendent is sending out the following: Oregon School Patrons: May I not ask for your co operation to the extentof giving a part of one day in the year to the consideration of public school questions? We are planning this year in the state of Oregon, to make the annual school meet ing day a great day by having as many of our people as possible attend the meet ing and learn conditions of our school plants. We expect to have an annual picnic on this day in many school districts, and we hope that everyone interested in the district.school wiil be present and help the school officers in making this event a grand sue cess. The annual school meeting in your district, this year, occurs on June 19. Please take the time on the morning of the 19th to go over to the school house and look over the school grounds and school buildings. See if you can help to have conditions improved if they need improvement; if they do not, may I ask you to show your appreciation to the members of the school board who brought about these conditions without pay or without thanks. Some of our school buildings are very unsanitary, and our schools will not be what they should be until we have the united support of all our school patrons. Yours for the best schools possible, L. R. Alderman. The following program is sug gested for the districts, and in dicates the matters that are con sidered as important by the state officers: Meet at 11:00 a. m. 1. Inspection of Grounds (a) Size, condition, freedom from rubbish, etc. (b) Water: 1. If well, when was it clean ed; condition of pump, drain nge of grounds. 2. If no well, have an enclosed jar or tank with faucet? (c) Outhouses: Are they sanitary? (d) Are the school grounds fenced? Do they need fencing? 2. Inspection of houses (u) Floor: When cleaned? (b) Walls: Do they need painting or cleaning? i.c) Heating: Location of stove; it should not be In center of room. Is there a jacket on stove? Wood supply. (d) Ventilating: Are there win dow boards? 3. 12 o'clock Lunch. 4. 1:30 I. M. Discussion of how the things inspected may be im proved. Fee If some definite ac tion can't be taken today. 6. 2:30 r. M. Turn meeting over to IJourq of Directors. Qualifications of Voters Any citizen of this State, male or female, who is twenty-one years of age and has resided in the district thirty days immedi ately proceding the mooting or election, and has property in the district, as shown by the last county assessment, and not as sessed by the sheriff, on which he or she is liable or subject to o n tjix. shall be entitled to vote at any school meeting or election in said district: provided, that, for the purposes of this section, any man who has de clared his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and has resided in the State for six months immediately proceeding the meeting or election where he proposes to vote, shall be consid ered a citizen of this state; pro vided further, that any person shall be deemed to have com plied with the property qualifica tions imposed by this section who presents to the directors or judges of election satisfactory evidence that he or she has stock, shares, or ownerseip in any cor poration, firm, or co-partnership which has property in his district as shown by the last county as sessment, and not assessed by the sheriff, on which such cor poration, firm, or co-partnership pays a tax, even though his or her individual name does not ap pear upon the tax roll; provided further, that in districts of the third class any head of a family who is otherwise a qualified elec tor, and having children of school age, may vote at such election without property qualifications.
