In an effort to introduce a crop that
may be grown with profit In a dry soil,
the tratllc department of the Harnmun
ltncs In the northwest, through its
office in Portland, is distributing 1000
pounds of seed of milo maize, a plant of
the sorghum variety, which has been
grown with much success in other dry
land territory.
A lot of selected seed was procured
from the milo maize district of Texas
and smnll quantities sufficient to sow
a small tract for experimental purposes
has been sent to several farmers in
the eastern part of the state They are
urged to plant it and care for it the
first year and to enlarge the tract de
voted to this purpose with succeeding
years, ir the Texas seed is not hardy
enough for the Oregon climate, the
second year's product, is pointed out,
will gain in hardihood and be suffi
ciently strong to withstand any climate.
In the past four or five years the de
velopment of milo maize as a grain
crop has been progressing rapidly. The
carefully selected milo maize of today
is a great improvement over the com
mon, unselccted crop. Ordinarily the
stalk has been reduced, by selection,
to n uniform height from 4 to 4J feet
in regions lying at an altitude of 3000
to 4000 feet. Through selection of seed
the heads have been changed from
mostly drooping to moBtly erect By
further care in choosing the seed,
branching has been almost entirely pre
vented and the growth of "suckers"
has been checked. Milo maize is at
present the most successful summer
grain crop for dry regions. It is earlie r
and a more drought resistant crop than
corn and mnkes a more satisfactory
feeding substitute. Tho average yeilds
of corn under same conditions have been
10 bushels to the acre less than that of
milo.
The soil requirements for milo maize
are about the same as those for corn.
Well worked sandy loams or clay loams
are best. The roots penetrate to depths
of three to four feet in ordinary soils.
Fair yields result on rather poor lands.
In the semi arid country much depends
upon how the soil is handled to conserve
moisture.
R. B. Miller, traffic manager of the
Harriman lines, has been instrumental
in the introduction or milo maize in
Oregon. He believes that carefully se-
ccted seed, through a period of from
two to three years, will develop a crop
that can be caily and economically
grown in the driest portions or the
state. The crop requires about the
same attentions as corn and can be har
vested at much less expense. The seed
contains the principal value and is fed
to chickens, cattle and hogs, wiihoutbe
ing removed from the stalk It has
been found best to allow the stock to
thresh out the seed for itsself.
Prlnevllle Will Celebrate
The business men of Prineville held a
meeting Monday evening and unani
mously decided to let the eagles scream
Ju y 3rd, 4th and 5th.
Twenty-five hundred dollars will be
spent n the celebration. There will be
a balloon, baseball tournament, a big
barbecue, auto races, street sports,
auto parade, street floats, etc.
The executive committee is com
posed of G. N. Clifton, It. L.
Jordan, L. R. Cooper, Collins W. El
kins and Frank Foster. Sub-committees
and final details will be an
nounced later. Journal
Mail by Railroad
H. G. Durand, postoffico in
spector stationed at The Dalles,
has been in Prineville arranging
to assist in the change of the
base of mail supply for Prineville
Redmond and other interior
points. Mr. Durand said all
mail should come from Opal City
or Culver Junction to Prineville,
because mail clerks run to those
points on the Oregon Trunk now.
He could offer no explanation
why there had been no change
made and wired the postoffice de
partment urging the change. G.
M. Cornett, present contractor
has submitted offers for the ser
vice from the points named, both
by stage and automobile.

zation of a Crook county base
ball league of not less than four
teams and the arrangement of a
schedule of games for the sum
mer. The plan is to have Prine
ville, Redmond. Madras and
Bend, and probablv teams from
other points in the organization,
and to set dates for games that
will give each town a came everv
other Sunday.
This idea is well received hv
the Madras players, and the
prospect for good ball looks
bright at present.
A letter has also been received
from the Dufur club, wanting to
arrange a game between that
team and the Madras tossers to
take place here but it is feared
that the expense of bringing.the
visitors to Madras would be
greater than the financial end of
the game would justify.
Ed. Brown will be with Mad
ras for the summer, and is con
sidered the strongest man in the
box in this part of the country.
Knapp will also be here to back
up the home plate, while among
the Harriman construction forces
now arriving here there is said
to be some classy players.
Prlnevllle's New Schoolhouse
The contract is let for building
the new schoolhouse at Prine
ville says the Journal. It will
be a handsome two-story brick
structure with cement basement.
It will contain nine class rooms
and will accommodate 450 pupils.
Additional class rooms can be
fixed up in the basement and the
building made to accommodate
600 pupils. The structure will
cost $23,463. The heating plant
will cost $3720 extra.
Special Car for Presbyterian
Assembly
A specialcar for the accommodation of
delegates and their families who desire
to attend the general assembly of the
Presbyterian church to be held at At-
antic City, N. J. will be attached to
train 18 of the 0. W. R. & N. C. leav
ing Portland at 10:00 a. m. May 12,
