The Madras Pioneer l'ubltslied every Thursday by TTUK 1'IONEKU 1'UHLISIUNO CO. 8UD8ORIPTION RATE8 ! Six months , Threo months '50 ADVKltTiaiNO ItATKB ON APPLICATION Entered as second clnss mntler Atimist 29, 1904, at the Postofflco at Madras, Oro.. umior io Act of Congress of March 8, 1R7H THURSDAY MAR 30, 191 1 EXPECT TOO MUCH. mere is apparently a spirit ot disappointment shown by some of the newcomers on ac count of the fact that they can not come in here and buy culti vated lands that are producing very profitable crops for a little of nothing. When they learn that the farmers here are selling at from $20 to $30 per acre their cultivated lands on which they have lived and labored and made improvements for the past six or seven years and have undergone all the many hardships that at tend the homesteader on raw land, they say: "Well the peo ple certainly want enough for their land." Verily, they do expect too much. Do they expect the peo ple who have pioneered in this county, endured all the draw backs and made good under diffi culties, are going to sell their lands for less than than they have found them to be worth? Where could they go and invest the money to better advantage? The people who have these lands and raised good crops on them know just as well as anyone else what their value is. They are not sick 01 tne county ana eager to get out at any price, for many of them previous to coming here have lived in the east and other sections of the country and know what conditions exist elsewhere as well as anyone. But as a matter of fact this country offers better opportuni ties to the man who wants to in vest in farm lands than any other. There is no. more cheap land to which patent has been issued. Central Oregon offers the last opportunity to procure low priced lands by pnrchase "or to acquire a home by settlement. The sensible man who does not expect to find cultivated lands open for homestead entry, but who is willing to make an effort cannot find a better place to come, for this is a country that will give him an opportunity to cret action on every ability that he may possess, and pay hand some returns for his work. FINE TRAIN SERVICE. The excellence of the condi tion of the track on the new Oregon Trunk railway and the splendid train service which is being given under the construc tion department of that line is a matter of great surprise and gratification to everyone who has been over the line from Madras to the Columbia, where connections are made with the North Bank. When the roadbed has become thoroughly settled and ballasted there will not be a better railroad in the country, as the foundation for the greater part of the way is on sold rock, and the standard of construction is the same as that of the North Bank, which is acknowledged to be one of the best built roads in the world. While trains have been running oyer the line less than a month, the time made is better than 20 miles an hour, and the accommodation is as good as on many of the older roads.
