F. E. Dayton of Laidlaw, spent several days in town the latter part of this week, unload ing some sawmill machinery, which he expects to use in a new mill which he is establishing west of Laidlaw. W. D. Barnes of Laidlaw. stayed over night in town Tues day, being on his way home from a ten days visit in Salem. Wm. W. Essolstyn of Adams, Oregon, arrived in Madras Satur day, and will have charge of the Tum-A-Lum Lumber Company's yard at this place. This com pany has succeeded in getting in several car loada of lumber over the Oregon Trunk Line, and they still have several cars on the road between Madras and the Columbia River. Building material and lumber is begining to arrive in quantities and sizes sufficient to .accommo date the present demands. How ever, many buildings contem plated, cannot be commenced owing to Bizes needed. The Central Oregon Lumber Company have established a yard just north of the stock yards, and this week commenced unloading lumber for the local demand. J. H. Scritsmier has charge of the business at this point. L. E. Doonar, mansger of the Pioneer Telephone ane Telegraph Company with a party of line men have been in Madras several days this week, installing sever al new phones, and increasing the efficiency of the service gen erally. W. H. Taylor, owner of the Railroad Addition to Modras, is having the streets graded and the land cleared, also arrange ments are being made to supply the whole area in the vicinity of the depot with water from the new system now under con struction by the city. T. P. McAllister of Crooked River brought in another large band of mutton sheep Tuesday evening, they were loaded on the cars yesterday to be shipped to the Portland market. Mr. Mc Allister has made several ship ments of sheep from this point I and also has about 2500 head more that will be ready for ship ment in the next few weeks. I. Segal made a business trip to Bend and Redmond the latter part of the week. C. E. Roush and wife left Sunday morning for Portland, where Mr. Roush expecto to pur chase a large quantity of summer merchandise. C. K. Loucks and wife were passengers out Sunday morning on the train for Portland, where Mrs. Loucks will hp. imrW fho doctors care for a short time. Musicians Organ ize Brass Band Consistant with the other city habits and ways, which Madras is putting on this summer, it will be but a few weeks before the Gateway City can boast of a brass band. F. F. Fine, of this city, is at work on the organi zation, and has already secured the services of a number of persons who have worked in bands before, in addition to quite a few who have played in struments, but have never had any actual experience in an or ganization. The necessary in struments which are not already owned by the fellows have been ordered from a large eastern house, as have band books, and within the next fortnight, actual practice will have been begun. Prof. Fine says that they will be ready to furnish all the music necessary for any kind of July 4th. celebration which the people might call for. The present roster of the band follows: F. F. Fine, director; Charlie Baker, Roscoe Crosby, T. B. Tucker, Charlie Eagle, C. E. Roush, Dr. Long, Earnest Smith, Max Wilson, Fred Zell, John Baker, Ed. Dunn, S. D. Percival, L. R. Hammer and R. Steel, J. Campbell and J. R. Southman. In addition to these it is expected that others will join as soon as the organization is a little further advanced, and actual practice has begun. It is expected that there will be over 20 pieces. Prof. F. F. Fine, who will direct the band, is a musician of some note, having conducted bands of his own in Reno, and was for a time, a member of the famous 7th Regi ment Band of Los Angeles,, in which there were over 50 pieces.
