First Shipment of Stock to Portland Stock Yards The first shipment of stock or other freight left Madras Friday morning it being four carloads of Bheep billed for the Portland stock yards. Prank Cox, of Prinoville, brought to Madras of last week a band of 1000 head of sheep for shlnment over th Oregon Trunk Line but on reaching here found the track had not yet reacned Madras, but if he would wait a few days, cars would be brought to this point for the shipment of his sheep soon alter toe rails were laid, and this ne decided to do. While the Stevens party were here last Wednesday, arrangements were made for a special train, and this ar rived tnday morning. A temporary yard was built just above the Madras Union Warehouse so that they could be easily loaded, the train leaving hero at lo A. M. As htated above this was the first shipment of livestock to be sent to the Portland market, or any other from this section by rail transportation, and is only the commencement for many more that will follow in a few weeks. As stated in the interview with President Stevens and Mr. Colmm. General Freight Agent, permanent stock yards will be established at Madras, nreoar ations are now under way to carry out that plan. During the trip down the canyon one or the cars jumped the track, but was soon placed on the rails again and the train proceeded to its destination, and tne shipment arrived in Portland early the next morning. Special arrantre ments had been mnde at Clarke, on the Columbia River, for th shipment over the North Bank Road. P. F. Harding Traveling Freight and Passenger agent of the North Bank Road, who accompained the Stevena prty last week, remained a few days and had "charge of this shipment, so that no delays would be encountered. G3ES BY ALCOHOL ROUTE At an early hour Saturday morning at the camp of the city water works just south of town, was found the body of David Mathers who had died some time during the night. In the night some of those sleeping in the tent heard a man come up to the cjni wno nnaiiy tottnd his way nearly around to the door, when he fell over, and they thinking that he had gotten up and gone away did not go out to in vestigate, but in the morning his body was found a short distance from the door, laying as it h d undoubtedly fallen the night before. The coroner was notified and an inquest was held over the remains, and upon investi 1 gating found the circumstances and the effects of the dece sed, a bottle that ' had contained pure alcohol was found, and the conclusion was drawn that he had purch sed the pure stuff the night before and drinking it had caused heart failure, which was the verdict of the jury. No trace of relatives could be found other than some correspondence from some one in North Yakimn, Wash This person has been commnuicated with. Interment was hud at the Mays cemc tery Saturday morning. CULVER JUNCTION NEWS Messrs. Stewart and Rice of Prine- ville are at the Cove Orchard making the survey for the Cove Power plant. The survey for the pipe line frcm Opal Springs to Culves Junction has bien completed and soon this place will have a city water system that will be second to none, meantime the deep well will furnish water to all. At a mass meeting of the farmers and business men here it was deter mined to erect a warehouse and the name of the company will be the Culver Warehouse Company. Work on the building will be begun right away4 The batchelers of Culver Junction entertained the batchelor girls at a dinner Monday evening, the dinner being prepared by the gents. Turkey and other good things were Berved and u number of afVr-dinner talks were made. All very much enjoyed the dinner and voted that the batchelors, both boyB and girls, need not remain batchelors any longer if they would only git enough courage to propose. Culver Junction is to have a news paper, The Deschutes Valley Tribune, machinery and equipment. for which is o i the way fron Portland. Messrs. Young and Chandler will be editors and pjblishers. A celebration consisting of a fish barbecue, old settlers reunion and rail road day will, be held in Culver Junc tion upon the arrival of the rails of the Desehutcs Railroad here. All are invited and especially the old settlers of the Central Oregon country. There will be o meeting in Culver Saturday night to ortfanijso a band.
