Seventy miles of track have been laid on the new grade of the Oregon Washington Railroad & Navigation Company, leading up the Deschutes canyon into Central Oregon. Within a few weeks the road will be completed to the town of Madras and trains placed in operation. The Deschutes branch leaves the main line of the Oregen-Washington Railroad & Navigation Company at a point near the confluence, of the Des chutes River with the Columbia. This point Is about 110 miles east of Port land. The Deschutes line of the Harriman system is one of two roads that have chosen the Deschutes canyon as a means of access to Central Oregon and for a distance of 70 miles the roads par allel each other one on one side and one on the other side of the gorge. At times the grades are but 300 feet apart and atone point the rival road, the Oregon Trunk line, crosses the riv er, tunnels through a"High rock cliff by the side of the O. W. R. & N. road and then crosses back to the- west side of the river, ComDletton of the Harriman road to Madras is temporarily delayed at the present end of the rails. For many weeks the two roads contested in toart and otherwise for right of way advant- lit what is known as the bmitn ranch, a place opposite the Rnrintra Indian Reservation, roads desired to locate their grades in the same place. An adjustment was finally made, by the terms of which the nrocrnn Trunk line is 10 miles of railroad on what has been the disputed territory and the Harriman road is to have trackage right over it. Th conflict, however, delayed the com mencement of construcf ion so long on t ie 12 miles of grade at a tunnel that is ired in that section When you arrange your eastern trip be sure to include the Sunset Route through New Orleans, El Paso, Los Angeles and San Francisco for return. It is a splendid educational journey, and at this time of the year especially delightful because so warm and com fortable. Every mile is through the sunny southland-the rice and cotton fields of Lousiana and Texas, the vast mirage mesesof New Mexico and Ara zona, now spread with bright green, the orange groves and semi-tropic charm of California, miles and miles along the ocean shore, and several of the most interesting cities on the con tinent. Ask your-local railroad agent all about it. f23-tl reasonable value of $294.60, no part of which has been paid, although more than three months have expired af ter the grain, hay and feed was fur nished and the labor and care bestowed. That the money realized from the sale of the above described stallion wi 1 be first applied to the payment of our lien lor furnishing feed, grain and hay for said stallion and for work and labor in caring for same n the total amountof $294.60 and the costs and expenses o this sale, the balance rf selling price, if any, will be disposed of according to law.
