.J. ii The Best Field For Colonization Says President Louis W. Hill, of the Great Northern "Oregon presents a better field for colonization than any other state today, not alone because of the lack of development of a large portion of it, but also because of the fact that almost any variety of climate that may be found from Maine to Ma son and Dixon's line, or between the Atlantic coast and the Mississippi Riv er, may be f. und in Oregon." Mr. Hill and the great financial interests he represents are backing their judgment regarding this state by investing mo-c millions in this field than have ever been spent here in a similar period. The North Bank Road, across the Columbia River, was built almost ex clusively for the purpose of developing the great trade of the Willamette Val ley, Central Oregon and the coast re gions of the state. The construction of that road was followed by the absorp- J tion of the Astoria & Columbia Rail-' road, the Oregon Electric and United J Railways systems and the building of a road into the long-neglected Central Oregon country and to the Pacific Coast by way of Tillamook and Nehalem. The possibilities of the region now being Invaded by the Hill lines are so great, however, that it is hardly pos sible that the present aversion to rail road invetsments will extend far enough to retard construction of the necessary feeders in Oregon and Wash ington for a period of great length. In view of the unsettled financial condition in the East and the hostile sentiment that is preventing invest ment in railroad securities, it is some what surprising that the work on both the Hill and the Harriman systems in this state is progressing as rapidly as it is. The combined mileage of newj track which will bo laid by these lines in 1910 will exceed that of any previous year of railroad building in the history of the state. In order to got this new territory which is being opened up into traffic-producing condition the railroads are making Btrenous efforts to Induce immigrants to come to Oregon. Pub licity work now carried on in the East is the most effective that has ever been undertaken. CATALOGUE BUYING. Many Disappointments Resulting From Sending Money Away. There are limits to the possibilities of making purchases from no better guido than a catalogue picture, aud many must bo the disappointments re sulting from it. Suppose that the trust lng woman's eye Is taken with the print of n gown described by the opt! mlstic recorder of suqh things as Alice blue. It sounds safe. Blue has always been her color, and she fills out the blank. Then comes the business of choosing the hat that is to go with It and supplement Its work of electrlfy- lug the citizens of the humlet In which she lives. Aud of course there Is a hat that just suits, and the text prom Ises that It will be furnished In any one of six colors, one of them being providentially Alice blue. Gloves, veil and parasol, all of them are supplied by the merchant In the same lovely shade, and It looks as If a costume of surpassing beauty and completeness were about to be acquired. Later It arrives, all Its several parts Intact and "Just as advertised." But, oh, shades of Alice, can It be that the daughter of a president lent the sane tion of her name to this variety of blues blues that represent almost the whole gamut of tints and in comblna tion are nothing short of distressing? New York Herald. Courage Oh. fear not In a world like this And thou shalt know ere Jons Know how sublime a thins it is To suffer and be strong!
