( (MMMMMaMiiiii'11' i COMMUNITY PUBLISITY Ik (Continued from Page I) PROFESSIONAL CARDS. g "B headquarters at Cleveland, for mer general manager of the 0. R. & N. "The community booklets which the people of Oreson issue seem to be exactly the right thing to obtain the desired re sults, and the right class of peo ple for settlement along your line, " he writes. He added that that line of publicity, with news paper advertising, is bringing Oregon into favorable promi nence throughout the East. Ben Campbell, in charge of the traffic of the New York, New Haven & Hartford road, and for mer traffic manager of the 0. R. & N., after making like com: ment, gives the information that the officials of that line are con templating a similar campaign of publicity through the New England States. The passenger department of the Grand Trunk Railway, with headquarters in Montreal, also wishes to keep supplied with ex ploitation literature. An offcial of the line writes that he has daily requests for Oregon literat ure and information. People there, he says, are desirous of securing land in Oregon and of settling in the larger cities and towns. In addition to these the Penn sylvania system through J. W. Lee, Jr., has asked the oft-re peated question, "'How is it done?" and implies that his lipe wants to do likewise. Local railroad orhcials .are as siting the Eastern roads in eyery way possible to spread Oregon advertising through that portion of the country. They are glad that the results of their per sistent campaign have been no- ticeable there. Another line of community publicity that has made Oregon known throughout the blast is the practice of sending display cars of state products over the Eastern roads. These Western lines now operate cars of that kind. It is probable, however, that that feature of advertising will be discontinued after a few more years, as the movement of display cars is said to entail con siderable difficulty. The permanent display rooms established by the Great North em and other Western roads in many of the large Eastern cities are likely to replace the travel ing exhibit. By constantly re newing these displays with fresh fruit and vegetables, the development of the state is pic tured to the Eastern admirers vividly. This practice, too, has brougt forth many inquiries from offi cers of civic bodies in other parts of the country who contemplate adopting similar methods. DEMOCRATS MAKE GREAT GAINS IN EAST Dix Defeats Stimson in New York Ohio and Indiana Democratic. DEMOCRATS WILL CONTROL HOUSE Chicago That the next House or Representatives will be controlled by the democrats Is conceded. The dem ocrats gained from the republicans seats In congress In eight states. In New York seven republican seats were secured by the democrats; In Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, each, the republicans lost two seats. Losses are definitely Itnown to have been sustained In Il linois, Kentucky, Missouri and Ojilo. The known democratic gain of 18 Beats, Is offset by two republican gains from the democrats, ono each In New York and Pennsylvania. Re ports received from other states in dicate that the democrats will havo ample margin to secure them the 22 seats necessary to give them control of the House, two democratic gains previously having been reported In Maine. Twenty-four were acquired before the Maine election. New York Elections throughout the country Tuesday resulted In a po lltlcal convulsion of far-reaching ex tent, similar at many points to tho famous wave of 1892, and apparently more widespread In Its effect. In New York, John A. Dix, demo cratic candidate for governor, Is elect ed over Henry L. Stimson, republl can, by about 5.000, reversing th republican plurality of 70,000 in 1903 for Governor Hughes. New Jersey Is Democratic. in jsew Jersey, Woodrow Wilson democratic candidate for governor, Is elected over Vivian M. Lewis, republi can, by about 15,000, reversing tho previous republican plurality of 8,000 for governor. In Massachusetts Eugene N. Foss democrat, has defeated Governor Eben S. Draper, republican, for re election, by about 30,000, reversing Governor Draper's former plurality of 8.000. In Connecticut Judge Baldwin, dem ocrat, is elected over Charles A Goodwin, republican, by about 4,000, reversing the previous republican plu rallty of 16,000. In Ohio, Governor Judson Harmon democrat, candidate for re-election appears to have carried the state by about 15,000, over Warren Q. Hard Ing, republican. Vote In Rhode Island Cloce. In New Hampshire, Robert P. Bass republican candidate for governor. Is leading C. E. Carr, democrat, by about 6,000. In Pennsylvania, the election of jonn h. Tener, republican, for gov ernor, is conceded by a large ma jority. JOHN A. DIX, Successful Democratic Candidate for Governorship of New York. In Rhode Island, Governor Pothler, republican. Is elected by a plurality of 1200. In Tennessee, the fusion candidate, Ben. W. Hooper, Is elected by 15,000. In Iowa the democrats claim the. election of Claude R. Porter for gov ernor, but this is not yet conceded. Wisconsin to Return l.aFollette. In Wisconsin, the election of tho republican candidate for governor. Francis E. McGovern, Is claimed by a reduced majority, and the return of Senator LaFollette to the United States senate Is assured. In Michigan Charles S. Osborn, re nublican candidate for governor, la assured. Theodore Roosevelt's home district In OyBter Bay, Long Island, gave Dix a plurality of 204, as against a plural ity of 793 for Hughes in 1908. In Utica Charles A. Talcott, demo crat, defeated Charles S. Millington, Vice-President Sherman's nominee, for congress by 3708. There were notable upsets In the congressional districts. Representa tive Herbert Parsons, a life-long friend and political associate of Theo dore Roosevelt, was ousted by Jeffer son M. Levy. Representative W. W. Cocfcs, of Nassau county, Theodore Roosevelt's hom seat, was tipped out by Martin Littleton. William B. Bennett was defeated for congress- by Henry Oeorge, Jr., a son of the political econ omist. Sereno Payne, father of the tariff bill, was re-elected, but his homo town, Auburn, went for Dix, and Vice President Sherman's candidate for Notice for Publication. Department of tho Interior, U. R.
