Under the present Ihwa In U10 opin ion of-omlnont lawyers, countlei can only be divided or boundaries changed by the vote of the people. All laws siiouhl be obeyed. Some laws should be appealed or amended. The law creating ;iew .counties is tin fair as voters are asked to crento now counties where thoy cannot know the local conditions and might form a new county where four-fifths or the residents of the old county are op posed to it. What do the voters of Clason know of tho needs of Grant. Malheur, Crooi:, Umatilla, DdiiElas, Lane, Wash ington, Clackamas and Multnomah. They could vote just as intelligently ' f6r the county officers in these coun ties as for their .division or the chang ing of the boundaries. There is strong opposition to di vision in all the countios mentioned and it would seem to be but justice that tliose localities should settle their own local differences. " . You will have the privilege of .vot ing for a bill to loave the function of new counties and municipalities tothe districts interestd. As botween man and -man, jvould not this plan be the more equitable? The average voter will certainly take this view of it. In all fairness now, will not your conscience and sense of right tell you to vote against all division and vote "Yes X 352," which will relieve you of tho task of voting for measures with which you can not be familiar. GUY COUNCIL ORDERS NEW CHEMICAL ENGINE A. special session of the City 'Council was called for Friday night and the matter of the city purchasing another chemical fire extinguisher was taken under consideration. S. P. Wright, reDresentinsr the A. G. Long & Co., of Portland, of whom the chemical engine already owned by the city, was purchased, was resent, and explained to the members the workings of the different machines. This matter had been talked over a number of times in former meetings, and the necessity more made more urgent owing to the fire in Shaniko last Friday morning. It was decided by a" vote of the council to buy an other of the same type as the present one, so that in case it should be necessary to use both of them at the same time, that the different parts would be in- terchangable, or it might be nec essary to use the machines in different parts of the town at the same time. With two machines within easy reach, and being ready on a moments notice, it is hoped that any fire that might get started, could be gotten under control before doing any considerable damage. FORTUNATE ACCIDENT WITH AUTOMOBILE What might have been a seri7 ous accident happened to Mr.' and Mrs Fred McDowell Satur day afternoon, as they were re- . turning from a short trip in their automobile, in the Opal Prairie country. Mrs. McDowell was driving the machine and they were pass- ing over a new section of rail road grade, when the machine became unmanageable in the so'Ctoarth, and before it could be stopped slid off the grade and turned over in the ditch, throw ing Mr. McDowell clear of the machine, his only injury being a strained shoulder. Mrs. Mc Dowell was pinnod. under tha machine, fortunately the dirt being only recently placed there" was soft, and she escaped with only a seyere shaking up. The damage to the machine was slight, tho principal injury being to the steering aparatus, which was considerably bent. .
