Madras's GrowtH Will Be Rapid on Arrival of Rail m MISS BERTHA HORNEY PASSES AWAY Miss Bertha H'orney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Horney, died at the family home south of Madras last Saturday evening, September 17, 1910, of typhoid. Miss Horney became ill about three weeks before her death, and at one time was thought to be on the road to recovery. Last week however, her case took a turn for the worse and her. death occurred as stated. The following was contributed by a friend: . Bertha Horney was born in Warren county, Illinois, Febru ary 17, 188G. When she was six years old her parents came to Oregon and for nine years re sided near Brownsville. From there they came to their home -near Madras, where she died, Saturday, Sept. 17, at about 5 o'clock. She united with the M. E. Church when she was 10 years old. She leaves a father, moth er, bi'other and sister, one sister having preceeded here to the spirit world a few years ago. And to one of the watchers at her bedside she said: "I see Eunice. She is calling for me she wants me to come to her." The remains were laid to rest in the Madras Cemetery Sunday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted at the M. E. Church by Rew G. R. Moorhead (for two years her pastor) assist ed by Rev. ,J. H. Barkley and Rev. M. W. Weaver. A throng of people at the church and cem etery showed how much this beautiful life was appreciated in the community. Person owning same, call and prove their property and pay expense of keeping and ad vertising, ui my runca on ujmi M. Davis. Prairie. at James s22p M. O. Leighton, Chief Engineer of the Geological Survey, is out from Washington making personal examina tion of the lands temporarily with drawn for water power sites. He was in Bend Saturday on his way down the Deschutes to tne mouth of Crooked. He will examine that stream, which will end his work in this section. He traversed the course of the Des chutes from its mouth to a point above the junction of Big and Little rivers. Mr. Leighton declined to say what he would recommend as to the lands withdrawn. He did say that he found the Deschutes river from Benham Falls to mouth to be almost a continuous series of water powers, and many of the con troling sites are still in the hands of the government. The inference was plain that withdrawal of such sites would be made'permanent, with a view to con gressional action. It was also fairlj Oregon Trunk's Car Ferry Tested. Tests or the new car ferry and in clines near the mouth of the Deschutes ,to be placed in service by the Oregon Trunk Line, were made yesterday, and it is expected that within a day or two regular communication for construction purposes will be established 'across the river. As soon as the car transfer is working smoothly rails and ties will be transported across the river and track- laying will be begun. It will proceed at the rate of about two miles a day, The company had expected to begin laying rails about 10 days ago, but de lays were encountered in completing the inclines on the north nnd south shores of the Columbia River. Loaded cars are to be transferred by means of these inclines between the rail lines and the ferry. Part of each incline is built under water and it was necessary to omploy divers to do the work. Mate Statu Ml Anti-Assembly Republican Candidate for Congress has been making an ag gressive campaign throughout the dis trict, speaking in each Of the 17 coun ties. He is the only candidate, state or district, to make such a thorough can vas, and he has been greeted by large and enthusiastic audiences everywhere. In his speeches Lafferty has shown how this state has been neglected at the hands of the National administration, and has paid particular attention to the Pubic Land question, in which he is well versed. He is author of the suits to break the Oregon & California Land Grant, now pending in the Federal Court. He originated the plan for con veying the forest reserves in trust for the State. Lafferty stands for the Direct Pri mary and Statement 1. He favors re duction of the tariff, enlargement of the powers of the Interstate Powers. Commission and Creation of a Public Service Commission to the end that all monopolies shall immediately be brought under legal subjection. It can not help it, and all creation , not kecpt back. There have bcon several towns promoted- on paper trilyJ Madras. They will always remain paper made towns, and there will probably k J to follow. Madras is already a substantial town with its (lour mill, substantial bank j numerous business houses, and will control the business between the Crooked U Canyon and the Columbia River, in fact, for n distance of from 50 to 100 each side of it. The New York Herald and many large Eastern papers contain full page advertising Madras and Central Oregon. Who is doing all this' advertising? t be the two big railroads. Why aic they advertising Madras with Central Of J Because it has a stragctical position, and is certain to make a city of some import, It has a vast area of agricultural resources surrounding it that the railroads looktok their principal tonnage. With the building of elevators, flour mills and other cotnm industries, and the almost unlimited area of agricultural resources surrounding il, will become the heaviest shipping point on the new railroads now building.
