the restaurant business of Kennedy &

Madras new water wagon or street
sprinkhr was put into service Monday
morning for a short lime but it didn't
seem to leak fast enough to do any good.
The ground nt one end of the street over
which the sprinkler had passeJ would be
dry before the spiiukler could traverse
the street nnd icurii. About that time a
rain commenced falling which effectually
settled the dust. Tuetday night another
rain fell nnd there has been no need of
the sprinkler The water wagon is to be
remodeled so ill it it will let out more water.
II. Z Giiffith and N. C. Jaunsen, well
drillers, arrived in Madras the last of the
week and have formed a partnership un
der the name of the Madras Well Drill
ing Co. They h ive purchased the Love
land drilling plant and will engage in that
buiiness. At the time the purchase of
the machinery was made the drill was
sinking a well for Wm. Steinke just south
of town. The new proprietors will finish
this contract and then expect to go to
Opal Prairie to sink a well or two for
Itarber & Cockerham, on the new Culver
(ownsite.,
J. C. Robinson holds the record for
making the first trip by auto to the Cove
Orchard, on Crooked River, the feat hav
ing accomplished by him last Friday in
his 22 II. P. Hulck car. Mrs. Robinson
and Miss Minnie Monner accompanied
him. No difilctilties were encountered
either in going down the steep grade nor
in climbing out again, except that in one
or two places where large rocks are in the
center of the road, loose rocks had to be
piled on each side in order to make the
machine clear the obstruction. The grade
down the rimrock from the plain to the
level of Crooked River at The Orchard
drops at the rate of about 1000 feet in
less than a mile and there it not more
than six inches margin at many points
between the road and the precipice below.

player while at the state college.
Mr., and Mis. Cate left for Portland
today. They will make their home near
Brownsville, where the groom owns a
fruit nnd dairy rau-h.

I have grown alfalfa on my farm near Culver 16 years without irrigation or reseeding. The yield per acre
has been from 3 to 3 tons. For the past five years I have cultivated heavily in the spring with a disc har
row, under which treatment the stand is improving. I have no doubt but that the same may be profitably
