opened here; buildings are lu

rush, the hammer and saw i
heard from daylight till daik
semes of busy peopie are pass
ing along the streets, the mer
chants have all they do to ban
die their trade, there is work
for everyone who wants ii; tin-
chnnce to get busy in altnos'
any calling, to make good and
to prosper. The streets are
crowded with heavy freight
teams, autos whiir tapidh
about and there is the spirit ol
energy in the air that makes a
man get up and get. New peo
pie arriving daily, restaurant
and rooming-houses are crowd
ed, hotels are inadequate.
Now comes inquiries looking
,to the establishment of an elec
tric light and power plant foi
this city. A system of cit
water works will soon also b
attracting the attention of cap
ital, while already a move is on
foot for a local telephone sys
tem. Added to all this activity the
work of grading on the Hill
railroad south lrom this poini
will soon commence, making
this headquarters, for a time at
least, of another army of lail
road builders.
And as a sort of bass accom
paniment to all the hurry and
bustle of work about town can
be heard day and night the
heavy blasting of the rock
workers who are tearing the
Jockribbed canyons into smith
ereens making a way for the
trains that will be steaming
into Madras some time this tall.
Wages are on the rise too.
Common laborers on the rail
load work ire getting $2.50 per
day. With the commencement
.pi" work on the new contract
south from this place there is
Hi' possibility of another lise.
Wiiile the people in town tire
busy, so are the .farmers.
Bvery kind of product niised
on the farm can be sold a.t high
ptiues. The ranchers know now
or sure that they can reach a
quick market ( for everything
they can produce, and in con-
( sequence the everlasting sage
brush and junipers are disap
pearing at a tremendous rate,
the seeds are going into tin
.soil, the cultivation is being
done with an assurance thut
..when harvest time comes there
.will be prosperous times that
kwill justify the dreams of the
tljnoat optimistic enthusiast about
.the possibilities of agriculture
in Central Oregon.

Frank Loveland is exhibiting
about town today specimens of
