OREGON TRUNK GOING SOUTH Orngonian Bids have been called for the grading of the Oregon Trim It Line from Madras to t lie north ern line of the Klamath Indian reservation, and it is expected that the work will be under way by May 1. This announcement is a confirmation of the report printed several weeks ago, tho ' at the time, it was denied "by officials of the road. Any one familiar with the topogra phy of the country traversed by the Oregon Trunk on which work is already in progress, would hardly doubt for a mom ent that the line was to be push ed south after emerging fiom the Deschutes canyon and reach ing the borders of the great Central Oregon empire. The most expensive part of the linn will be completed by the time the southern end of the canyon is reached. It would be strange, indeed, if the road was not con tinued far enough south to equalise the heavy oost of con struction and at the same limn supply the road with traffic which could not be reached with a terminus at Madras. There are many reasons win Portland' would like to see the state lino the southern termi nus of the road. It would then draw all the traffic to this "city. But there is no good reason for believing that the Klamath coun try will be any more of a term inus for the Oregon Trunk than there was for believing that Madras was the finat objective point. There are so many ex 'cellent reasons why the Hill line should push on to Califor nia and so lew reasons why it should terminate in Oregon that it may be regarded as a certyiu 13' that the road will be pushed through to San Francisco at the earliest possible day. Long before the line reaches the Cal ifornia metropolis, however, it will have opened up a wide area of new trade territory which will be tributary exclusively to Portland. It will tap vast tracts of fiue timber and will build up new cities and towns, all of which to greater or lesser degree will pay tribute to Portland. The Har ritnan lines, which are also pushing southward with sur veys looking to move favorable routes, will also aid in this new development. After years of waiting, one of the richest por tions of the state is at last to re ceive transportation facilities, the lack of which alone prevent ed growth equal to that in other parts of the state.
