The one great question of in terest to this particular locality at the present time, is the irri gation of extensive plains North of Crooked River, which can only be accomplished by private company, owinir to the fact that the government is uoi going to spend any money on new projects until some of the present ones are completed. Many objections are present ed against the idea of allowing such an enterprise to gel into the hands of private individuals, but there is a state law which regulates the time that work has to oommenoe, and also re quires the payment of taxes on private owned water and powei sites. This will have a tendenoy to assist those interested in this seotion, in that the projeot will have to be completed within a stated time. Dry farming produces ex? tremely good quality in inos? farm produpts, and. in this sec; tion it should be considered a permanent industry in agri culture with a future thai promises to be second tq none in its importance. The ques tion of raising vegetables antt graind in a semi-arid country without irrigation is a deep Btudy, requiring unceasing apr plication in order to acquire tho correct methods of scientific culture. One of the most encouraging features of the application of scientific farming in semi-arid districts is that it permits the occupation of the public dor main by the small as well as the large land owner. TOWNSITE BEING LO CATED ON OPAL PRAIRIE AnotliPS new townsite is pro jected, it being located in the Opal Prarie district, about eight miles south of Madras on the places forme; ly owned by Dan Swift, and Fred Killingbeok, but now owned by J. Chandler anived in Madras Mouday and went out to the places Tuesday morning, where they were met by Deputy Coun. ly Surveyor Armstrong and the work of platting the town was commenced Tuesday morning.
