THURSDAY MAR 2 1910 AFTER HOMESEEKERS Oregonian From now on, Oregon wil maKe a aoume uarnMed inva siort of the East- Not one, bu two transcontinental railroad systems will be in the field o state exploitation., calculated to superinduce immigration fever The Hill roads will go the Har riman roads one better in the battle game of advertising and we naturally expect that the Harriman lines will call and raise again. Let the game go on. bregon can stand it if the roof ia removed and the sky is made the limit But to dismiss persiflage as unworthy of so important a Inatter, the Oregon man hap jreason to be chesty over the prospective benefit wjrich this additional railroad advertising Is bjund to bring about. It bears every promise of more japid development in this state than has ever been experienced in the history of any other state. it means, as tue campaign is carried farther East among the artisans of New York, Penn sylvania and New England, the attraction of those who will be come cultivators of the small farm and fruit orchard, and .whose value in the more inten sive improvement of Oregon's opportunities is not to be over looked. It means, furthermore, a rapid growth .in population, and the advent of that class we will need in the encouragement and development of the small manufacturing enterprise. It means accretion to the average citizenship of the state, and that the addition will be made up largly of producing home build ers and home owners. ,. In the older settled portions ..of the state reached by the Southern Pacific and the 0. R. &N., the railroads have done much publicity work.. These lines, with their experimental In 'the East, and even in tlie mid dle West, it ia no lorier possi ble to secure good In nd at low prices, and through all that re gion is an enormous population that is gradually being crowded out. The West needs those qeople, and in Oregon there is plenty of room for thousands, even niil lions, before the state will reach its, maximum of production. Mr. Hills' plan for showing these people what actually can be .lone in Or- gon ban hardly fail to prove effective. In the. work lie will have ihe cordial support of all Oregon ians. With both - 1 the Hill and the Ilarrithan sy lems actively rustling up new settlers for the state, we are cer tain of a phenomenal incrnase m a very desirable class ottpop illation within the next year or 1 wo.
