THURSDAY DEC. 30, 1909 5 FIERCE COMF-ETITlbfi Portland OrHgoninn The SpokaiiH & Inland Eleotr'n line has a crew of surveyor! laying out an extension from Colfux through Spring Flat, Union Flat and Alkali Flat to La Crosse, and thence to a con nection with the Hill steam roads near Connell. This ex tension will reach some of the best wheat territory in the Inland Empire, and, as the traffic wilt l)e turned over to the North Bank Jine, it will all be brought down the river lo Portland Meanwhile the 0. R. & N. Go. has numerous surveying parties in the Palouse country seeking shorter, und better routes than those now used in reaching the wheat districts. Surveying foi railroads in midwinter in th Palouse country is neither easj nor economical but competition between the Hill and the Harri man lines has become so fierce that neither the weather nor the cost of the work is permitted to interfere with their work. , Oregon and other portions of the Pacific Northwest have (waited long for this overdue competition, which is so much in, evidence in the Pacific North west.. It has reached a degree ,of,intensity that prohibits any compromise that could become effective nnjI a vast amount of worknow tinder way fe com pleted. The building of the North Bank road seems to have been the starting point of this competitive railroad building. It was in resentment of this in vasion of what the late Mr. Har riniau regarded as his special preserves that the Union Pacific magnate bludgeoned his way .nto the Puget Sound country over the tracks of his great rival. This was followed by the ap .pearance of Mr. Hill in the Central Oregon field, and we are now to have two railroads where years of effort had pre veiously failed to give ns one. Even the Harriman line to Til lamook wag, progressing at a very leisurely pac,e,,nntil Hill surveyors became quite active ..running lines for an extension of the Astoria & Columbia River jine, arid also for a cross-country line. . The fact , that so .many of these rich districts w.ere eo longij neglected. by. ev,en one line does ."notj how, ayer, imply ,,tha.t.,there vill be insufficient business. for two roads. Quite the contrary ;itvill prove the t case when the pads are in, active operation. Every region in the Pacific .Northwest for which new rail , roads are nqw heading will Igive a good account, of. itself as .soon as the settlers ban get in "bud out over the new lines.j ,Tne first cost of some of the! hew roads will be enormous, but the promoters will no.t be .obliged to wait long for reraun-: erative returns. The Iteclama.tion Service re ports show that the allotment of jfunds for the Oregon projects is $1.GOO,000 less than the state is eivitled to according to the sales H oftr'egon, lands. In view of the, 4(geiflerottB manner in which the i 1. . . t; l. ""ma experto 'Oi ' me riuvuui , mi... Or- gonian, James J Hill, the great rail road magnate, says the United States neds a system of farm ing which will greatly increase the productiveness of the soil. Of com se, such would be very desirable and it is the duty of the farmers to make a thorough) study of the condition and do .ill they can to remove it. The oil is here and ny a proper use it will return what is expected fit. Without large crops of groin the nation cannot prosper; for all time. Salem Statesman.!
